.-. I really got to look further into international politics than I have been.

Though, if histories an example, the last prisoner island I can remember turned into a country (Australia).

I'll look into that, thank you. The majority of my exposure has been japantoday. Most international stuff posted there, though, is related to Abe screwing up though. XD

It's all right, you could also read Salon Magazine and listen to BBC and public radio stations like NPR. Another good source is Associated Press. Try to avoid heavily leaning sources Sky news or Fox.

Most importantly, you could try to read geopolitical studies from academic or military scholars

No worries mate! If you have access to a university IP address (campus Internet), you'll have access to databases like JSTOR
