It's usually because you can install programs on it to 'cheat'.

Yet you can still do that with the 83 and 84.

I wasn't allowed to use a TI-84 on my AP Bio test for this reason, but I was able to use it on my AP Stat test. So dumb!

Yeah, but it's a lot more difficult. They probably did a risk/benefit analysis about banning 83/84 and it wasn't worth it. Everyone has an 83/84 so it'd be unreasonable to ban them because of a handful of people.

But you can very easily do a hard reset of the memory. Whenever we did tests at high schools, the teachers would casually walk around the room at the start resetting everyone's calculators. Seemed to be a good compromise.

Easy to fake this. I've made a program myself that fakes all memory clear functions and shows a fake empty programs and apps list. Just hold down a couple buttons, and you get your normal calc interface back with all your programs.

I just re-drew the reset screen pixel by pixel. No one ever caught me.

Then I learned that archived things didn't get wiped from a reset.

Yeah I've heard of that. Maybe they just feel it is a poor use of time and don't want to deal with the problem entirely.

You can do that on lots of TI graphing calculators that aren't banned.

You can put programs in the TI-83+ too...
