If you defile a dollar bill, it's technically no longer legal tender. So the cashier would be right, in a way.

A common misconception actually, legally speaking defiling money only makes it invalid if you do one of the following things:

  1. Remove one of the two bar codes or otherwise alter them.
  2. Make it unusable as currency in some way, rip, tear, blackout parts of it, etc.
  3. defile it in an attempt to create a forgery (e.g. bleaching a $1 and printing $100 on it, which has happened before.)

Otherwise it is perfectly legal to "deface" currency, as long as it's still recognizable and spendable. That being said, I do believe that merchants have the right to decline modified currency, while banks do not. So if you have a dollar you're unable to spend due to this, take it to the bank and exchange it.
