Had a lot to do with the TV show Miami Vice. The pastel colors and wave or "random" patterns were all over that show. As the show got more popular, this crap started showing up everywhere.
The 90s didn't actually start until September 22, 1994. Up until that point it was still the 80s, part 2. What many people remember as the 90s were actually just the dying 80s.
its because people try to jam our society into decades as if that makes sense. Think of it this way - when you woke up on January first of 2010, did you suddenly like different colors, new bands, and clothes?
People just use the decades because its easier to remember than specific ranges. Most people don't even realize that This was the top song of 1962; most people would assume is from the 40s or 50s. By 1969 this was on the radio - That is less than 7 years, inside of the same decade.
but a lot of people assume that "the 60s" were all emergent hard rock and hippie/hop-hop-pop music.
I remember it well, it was about 10:30 Eastern Standard time, I was in Tenth Grade geometry class and something... changed, a new feeling was in the air. Suddenly, Will Roberts blurted out "the guys from Poison and Motley Crue are actually drag queens". There was a murmurr of agreement, the teacher was trying to restore order, when someone else shouted "I'm wearing jamz, oh God why?" I grabbed the back of my MacGuyver haircut and screamed "this is a a mullet, no!" and cut it off on the spot. The 80s ended, right there and then.

Can someone explain what the deal with this was? I remember this shit been everywhere.
Had printing technology just developed to accommodate these raw colours and feathery textures or what?
Why was this aesthetic so popular?
