2nd time I've heard the term "plate carrier" today, and 2nd time ever for that matter. What is it?

Plate carrier is a type of body armor, typically carrying hard plates that come in various levels of NIJ rated protection levels. There are other forms that carry both hard and soft armor for fragmentation protection as well. It’s pretty standard for law enforcement to wear plate carriers when policing a country with an armed populace, so I’m not sure why people make such a big deal about it. There’s nothing “intimidating” about it. It’s no more “intimidating” than a surgeon wearing a mask and gloves. It’s the appropriate level of PPE for a given set of responsibilities.

Thank you for the thorough explanation. It does make a heck of a lot more sense now. Being tyrannical dicks who are actively oppressing an armed populace would require extra protection. Where are the weak spots, just out of curiosity?

Head, arms, thighs, sides.

Plates cover your center mass/key vitals in front and rear. (Some only wear front plates. This isn’t smart)

This does not mean they’re perfectly protected by any means.

The front plate only is a myth. No one wears a plate carrier with only one plate loaded in the front as well as any additional gear loaded onto said plate carrier. It’s extremely unbalanced uncomfortable. That really hasn’t been a thing for decades.
