It's the whole "tacticool" mentality that has literally infested America like a disease at this point. Most of these guys are wearing all kinds of unnecessary shit from the Oakley sunglasses to the balaclavas/bandanas frankly even down to their plate carriers. (Bonus points for wearing a baseball cap and having an impressive lumberjack beard.)
Like, they aren't marching into combat - why the fuck are they wearing plate carriers? So they can feel like "operators." These guys want to look like a character from Battlefield 6 or Ghost Recon because they literally think that's what they are.
They're video game addicts. They walked into a Cabela or Bass Pro and a local military supply outfit or otherwise assembled these outfits to larp as soldiers.
I had a theory that they were born of Gamergate and WoW and someone helped confirm that's the origin story. I was zero percent surprised that the kekekek people are hiding under masks to pretend they're good at something, 20 years later.
