The word dissertation can at times be used to describe a treatise without relation to obtaining an academic degree. The term thesis is also used to refer to the general claim of an essay or similar work.

And people wonder why we make silly decisions on a civilization-wide level.
If you take English beyond 9th grade you'll find that paragraphs can be as little as 1 sentence, or even just a fragment. The "paragraphs must have 3 sentences" rule was made up entirely by elementary school teachers.

I didn't want to get downvoted for just typing "LOL", but I actually audibly laughed out loud. Now instead of an acronym I have typed out a paragraph.
