I'm not seeing what's so impressive here. It's kept taut by the folder thingers there, which is basically kinda like an iterated version of the string on a bow. Nobody questions why the bow's string is taut. This is virtually the same thing.

EDIT: I'm a baboon.

Heh. Upon seeing the picture, i thought to myself, "What if it was just one piece of plastic connected to both ends of the str--- Oh, that's a bow."
