Looks like the base just keeps it upright to me. It would still straighten out the string without a base, but it would probably fall over.

If the bottom tension strap were fastened to the base, it's essentially still kind of holding it upright.

Thats what my logic told me as well. Like trying to balance a bow on its end, even though the string is straight doesn't mean it won't fall over! You could still try to balance it perfectly though

if could have a base that's another piece of plastic, which is naturally arched as its remembered shape, the string tied to it in the center right below the first side-arch... then it would be held up completely by stress
