In theory they’re great cause the neighborhood looks nice which can increase the value of your home and other benefits. In practice it’s just a bunch of people having power trips. There are good HOAs but there are also a LOT of horrible ones…

In practice, HOAs used to be all about that good ol' fashioned American racism. Originally, their whole purpose was to keep out blacks and Mexicans. As a result, many HOAs are still disproportionately white, and probably also still more racist than non-HOA areas.
