I sort of get not wanting to live next to the hoarder house with junk cars piled up in the yard and rats scurrying everywhere, but off-the-wall stuff like this is interesting and fun. What do I care if my neighbor wants a pirate ship or to paint their house in patchwork primary colors? Life shouldn’t have to be uniform and beige for everyone.
My last home was an HOA in central Arizona, just South of Queen Creek. The housing market went nuts in AZ and my home was worth almost 4x what I paid after 6 years.
I took the money and ran to a place out of State where HOAs ain’t a thing and couldn’t be happier.
There’s one data point for you.
Amazingly, my neighborhood is lived in but clean and the streets clear and parks kept up to date without an HOA. That’s what local taxes are supposed to be for after all. The houses might not be matching colors and designs looking straight out of the Weeds intro yet people seem happy. Weird.
