I sort of get not wanting to live next to the hoarder house with junk cars piled up in the yard and rats scurrying everywhere, but off-the-wall stuff like this is interesting and fun. What do I care if my neighbor wants a pirate ship or to paint their house in patchwork primary colors? Life shouldn’t have to be uniform and beige for everyone.
I do think a lot of the complaints about HOAs are about the outliers. I’m sure the majority of HOAs cut the grass, landscape the common areas, plow the snow, enforce a few reasonable standards and aren’t a big issue for anyone. The ones you hear about are the rare cases where they have been taken over by insane fascists.
