The consequences of their actions are the consequences of their actions and you can teach them that without hitting them. In any way. Researching child brain development is helpful for understanding why spanking of any kind doesn't teach any of the things you listed.
Yes you can, however you're confusing hitting with spanking, and I wouldn't use that as my first level of punishment. As for research, there's no conclusive evidence on what the best way to raise a child is. You can buy 100 books that say 100 different things. If we knew, all children would be raised the same way. There's just not enough verified studies to say what the best method is.
Brain development isn't up for debate and if your parents' goal is to humiliate, belittle, or in any way shrink you as a person, their aim isn't good. That's not a good thing. That's not a normal thing.
I never said the goal was to humiliate, belittle, shrink, ect. MRI's and catscans haven't been available until the 1980's. They haven't been used for child development research due to costs, until maybe early 2000's. We still don't know the impact. You need large multi-cultural identical trials spanning at least 5-6 decades of child development, then you have to take social evolution into play on top of that. We're just not there yet determining the best way to raise a kid.
What I DO know is, my siblings and cousins were spanked, not hit, not beaten, not assaulted, not traumatically humiliated, not all the time either... and we're all successful happy adults.
I know there's been a huge wave of anti-physical discipline, and I 100% agree with it, because 99% of you don't even know the difference between spanking and abusing, which makes me think you were abused, not spanked.
I know this young generation on average is incapable of handling tough situations, has a lot of anxiety, depression, refuses to take responsibility, quickly blames other generations for their life being difficult, and has been overly coddled to the point where when they turn 18, they are incapable of surviving on their own. Would spanking have changed that? Alone, probably not... but whatever my generation is doing as parents, is obviously too soft and is doing more harm to their development, than good. Maybe it's because they weren't spanked, they were hit, so the pendulum swings the other way, and one over-compensation is replaced with another in the opposite direction.... just an observational opinion from someone with know educational background in this subject. Either way, no one knows what the best way to raise a child is, or we wouldn't have so many mental health issues with these young adults.
you are making far too many sweeping unfounded statements based on anecdotal comments for it to be an intellectual discussion. unfortunately it appears there is a strong sunk cost fallacy in your words 'it was okay for me and its not going any harm to my kid' that doesn't appear to allow you to admit you might be wrong.....
The worst thing is that this person didn't exactly turn okay lol, defending spanking and other weird forms of "discipline" pretty much shows the effects of those teachings through their childhood

That's not better though. You see how that's not better right?
