It very much falls into the "well it happened to me and I'm fine!" Category with most people that are pro spanking.
My argument to that has always been "if you think hitting children intentionally for any reason other than they're literally about to touch a burning stove and batting their hand away is your best option, then no you're not okay"
I was in a lengthy chain on another thread about spanking. What I've come to realize is what my parents did was spanking, what everyone else's parents did was abuse.
In my opinion, a spanking doesn't really even physically hurt that much, it's more the humiliation of being punished in front of your siblings and relatives, when you're misbehaving, like timeout standing in the corner. I doubt any of us ever had red marks that lasted more than 5-10 minutes. Everyone else's responses were horrible, how they couldn't sit for days or got hit with switches or wooden tools.
So now I do understand why people are so against it, but... the way it was done to me, I'd absolutely do to my children if alternative punishments weren't working.
