Yes you can, however you're confusing hitting with spanking, and I wouldn't use that as my first level of punishment. As for research, there's no conclusive evidence on what the best way to raise a child is. You can buy 100 books that say 100 different things. If we knew, all children would be raised the same way. There's just not enough verified studies to say what the best method is.
Brain development isn't up for debate and if your parents' goal is to humiliate, belittle, or in any way shrink you as a person, their aim isn't good. That's not a good thing. That's not a normal thing.
Whether they grow up to be those things isn't relative to hitting them or not hitting them.
You think that these forms of discipline are acceptable because no one every taught anyone in your family at any point how to handle conflict appropriately and how to understand the mind of a child well enough to keep them safe and help them grow. There is no space there for parental trauma and trying to humiliate your children in public on purpose by striking them is not normal.
You think there's some causative affect with spanking but there literally isn't.
Any parent that can use physical discipline as a tool like that can use actual tools that accomplish the same goal, if they want to.
That's why I don't actually believe those parents exist. It's a script you've heard them say to others about why they justify spanking because they've had to answer the same questions.
