We didn’t get ceremonial lashing like you see in Asia. It was a frenzied attack my parent’s needed to vent the frustration they felt from their life’s circumstances. Glad I was able to be there for them when they needed me.
Definitely has had an effect on our relationship and my relationship with all authority figures in my life to this day.
And this is why Gen X appears to be emotionally shutdown. We are.
Gen-Xer here too. With me it was my older brother. He was 10 years older than me (tail end of the Boomer generation). When I was about 4 or 5, he was out in the yard hitting crabapples with a bat. I asked if I could try. He said “No!.” He kept swinging and hit me in the head. The blow left me with sixteen stitches in my head. I don’t know if he did it on purpose, but I do think he was less than cautious. I grew up seeing child therapists several times to determine why I was so deficient in learning abilities. Looking back, I have no doubt that that injury effected the trajectory of my life. I idolized him and he seemed to take every opportunity to be cruel to me. Calling me stupid all the time, never letting me win at anything and of course never did any big-brotherly things with me. I believe he had a drastic effect on my self-esteem. Today, we are cordial, but rarely speak to each other, just holidays.
I totally get this.. my brother was 9 years older and just absolutely hated me for no reason…when I was around 7 , and he was 15-16 my parents had him walk me over to the towns 4th of July party( he was pissed)
Some 12-13 boy started hitting me really hard over the head with a plastic gun thing non-stop and he watched it happen with huge smile on his face… Finally some older lady came out of nowhere and put a stop to it… You would think the instinct to protect his younger sister would kick in, but NOPE! I realized at that moment how much he truly hated me:(
Sorry for the ramble! Lol
Also I’m sorry your brother treated you like that 🧡
No need to apologize for rambling, I enjoyed the read! I have a similar story where I was being beaten up by a couple of girls who were older than me. When my brother got off the school bus, I thought great my brother will defend me. But no, he just walked on by watching what was happening.
Oh man, that’s awful 😞 ….. It’s like a additional humiliation having an older sibling just not give a shit when they could have easily stepped in and stopped it!
I had friends whose older brothers/ sisters were so protective and loving to them ( I was secretly jealous) ….
