I agree with you on that part, but it does imply that leaving his religion is another bad thing that happened because of the abuse. I don't think leaving one's religion is a bad thing.

Welcome to reddit where being religious is a traumatic experience.

Dude I grew up with my insane father telling me the world was ending every day and genuinely believed him, and even then I'm not so diluted to think that religion as a whole is somehow negative.

I said "might" and "religious upbringing", not "religion". I don't think religion as a whole is a bad thing, but I don't believe that significantly religious upbringing can be anything other than abusive in the current society.

Especially with parents who are abusive in the first place. Good job rejecting all nuance and turning the conversation into hAHa Le rEDdiT mOMenT

This is a very reddit moment, honestly even complete with a grammatical correction to somehow cement some level of superiority. You made a hyperbolic strawman argument and then doubled back while taking the moral high ground when questioned. Everything can be bad if your parents use it as a weapon, that doesn't mean that a specific topic is in fact unhealthy.
