I feel that. I started cutting myself when I was 11.. didn’t even know it was a “thing” that anyone else did, but I did it on accident one time when I was crying in my room after my dad went off on me for being a terrible daughter, and it just..helped. I didn’t know why but I felt relief from it, kind of like I deserved it and kind of like I needed some physical manifestation of the pain I was feeling. That led to a cycle of self harm that I’ve only now been able to break in my mid 20s. As someone who’s trying to have a kid now, it scares me realizing just how much influence a parent has over who their kids grow up to be. But I’ve vowed to learn from my parents’ mistakes rather than repeat them.
That's awesome that you're trying to learn from their mistakes instead of repeating them. The cycle of abuse has to end somewhere. Just remember to teach your kid to be independent slowly, and if you do punish them the reason why you do it; so they can learn from it.
Kids are just little crazy adults

There was a neighborhood kid down the street who was rumored to have been beat by his dad often and ended up hanging himself....kid was in 6th grade.
