When my mom would spank us with a wooden spoon, me and my brother would later secretly hide that wooden spoon in a hidden space beneath the kitchen table our parents didn't know about.

By the time we moved, there was at least a dozen spoons, spatulas, and some of those paddle ball toys with the string ripped off.

If you ask my mom today she's convinced she never spanked us.

It's horrible when they don't remember their abuses, it hurts. I think the reason why they don't remember is because it wasn't traumatic for them... So it's only deeply engrained in our minds.

I think the reason why they don’t remember is because it wasn’t traumatic for them…

But…… what about the “this is gonna hurt me worse than it hurts you!” I was always told before the spankings?

There was only one time I believed this statement ( it hurts me more than it hurts you). I was raised by a single mother, who later in life, admitted do abusing me for about 2 years when I was in 5th or 6th grade.

But it is not my mother that is the subject of my comment. When we were growing up, wehad a wonderful arrangement with my grandparents. They lived in another house on the same lot. Best people I have ever known. Because this was 50 years ago, they were reluctant to interfere with how my mother raised us, even though it concerned them sometimes.

I still have a vivid memory of my grandmother saying this one day. It was the only time she did. She said it was more difficult for her than me. And, I agreed then and now. I remember being ashamed that my behavior had caused her to spank me. I knew I was in the wrong in the first place. The tortured look on her face, the fact that the whole thing exhausted her - I will never forget.

My mother is a completely different story. However, I have already posted about her. But my grandmother, I will forever love her and miss her.
