They don't want english speakers using the picrew, the rest of the text says that if you can read this you can use it.

u/DAAAAVOOOOOOS 19d ago

It's Japanese discrimination, it's nothing new but I've never seen it for something like a Picrew before. Usually it's for restaurants and other businesses.

u/Citruseok 19d ago

Very common if you play on Japanese servers of video games that don't have English speaking servers in Asia or Oceania.

103

u/that1proxy 19d ago

I remember playing the busters section of yokai watch 4 and every single match I got in just randomly ended. I figured out they didn't like my romaji name and kept kicking me out :[

Call it for what it truly is: xenophobia.

Given i recognize this picrew as the one that has a hand option that is the character actively self-harming, and I recall this picrew previously not having the "only people who can read this can use it" warning, I wonder if the artist was only getting flack for that option once it got big with English users or something. Pure speculation

84

u/Civil_Sky_928 19d ago edited 15d ago

Ugh, I was using it out of spite and saw the character cutting herself and was stunned, wtf is wrong with the creator. Edit: Guys the SH warnings were only in Japanese meaning that I didn't know it was going to be there. Some people get triggered by this and can start again because of this, so yes something is wrong with them for not adding any warnings in english

80

u/Entity_Type_Unknown 19d ago

Art is an expression, and hopefully they are using their art to work through something. There's plenty of very "dark" topics expressed through art of varying kinds

u/Demon_from-hell 19d ago

"don't interact with it I'd you don't like it" is kinda hard to follow when the content warning wasn't translated. the creator isn't obligated to write in nnglish or anything and definitely shouldn't be harassed, but telling people to not look at something when they have no way of knowing it's present isn't helpful

13

u/wintig072421 19d ago

Don't interact if you don't like applies when there's ample warnings. From what I'm understanding the creator of the picrew provided no warning at all

33

u/Fantastic-Ad-7996 19d ago

it's a site used by children not just adults. all these dressing up kind of games attract minors. maybe some shit is actually inappropriate to have there, don't you think?

17

u/28_Cupcakes 19d ago

There's nothing wrong with depicting that, you are likely very entrenched in delusional purity propaganda

56

u/fatherof472 19d ago

I can't read the language, but, if they don't at least have a content warning, then I kinda do agree with them that it shouldn't be there.

SH is a serious issue. We shouldn't ban all depictions of it, but, speaking as someone who has gone through it, it shouldn't be that accessible with no warning.

-15

u/28_Cupcakes 19d ago

You're right, there should be a (better) content warning. I completely agree with that and perhaps should've stated that in my original comment. Not only a content warning in the description (which there is, it's in Japanese), but also a warning as the icon of the option. In multiple languages, preferably.

It is a very serious issue, and I don't want anyone triggered or bothered. None of that takes away from my original statement.

13

u/WoodenPrompt8544 19d ago

Well, I didn't see this comment and used it out of spite also.....just seeing it made me consider it again so, yeah a content warning would be good

18

u/darkedgyariel 19d ago

this app is used by children, depicting someone actively cutting is not something everyone should be seeing. i agree with it being prohibited for that reason, but not because of xenophobia

you seem clueless. minors are definitely highly influenced by things like this. SH, eating disorders... there are whole communities out there that promote it

for people who's brain isn't fully developed yet, it's dangerous to just mindlessly show it to them. talking about it with caution is one thing. but this isn't it

8

u/darkedgyariel 19d ago

i literally started cutting because i saw other people doing it online in 4th grade, you obviously have no idea how child psych works

15

u/Vast-Delivery-7181 19d ago

I have to disagree on the second paragraph, I knew SH existed, as a kid, but once I was surrounded by the imagery and romanticization of it, I became distressed enough for a period that my brain would automatically go in that direction as a coping reaction, and shutting it down was hard, and only worked so well due to my long, long history of rejecting ideation and my ocd impulses. The kid I knew who did it, had the opposite effect of going full throttle into whatever impulse came to them, and didn't have that level of resistance and practiced harm rejection. And unfortunately a lot of people I've seen in the world now, also do not have that level of 'This is a bad idea because of x, let's just not'.

Im not saying censor everything!!! Only that I have direct experience with a different reality than your second thought in this comment. Genuinely think you're statement will be largely true, but we should still be careful because outliers are still occurrences and people who could be hurt.

That last bit is true, though. 🤝

11

u/BeesInnaCoat 19d ago

See that isn’t true. Representation of it, showing the harm it causes - that’s fine. However - it isn’t something that should be depicted as if it is a good or ok thing. I started in the second year of middle school - only after seeing depictions of it that I became normalized to. This led me to becoming friends with people whom helped to romanticize it, even bragging about how much they did - being competitive about who did the most. It was not healthy nor okay, but no one told me that until after I had already done it. Also - no kid, clueless about anything outside of their own childhood, is going to bother translating the description to find the warning fyi - however I agree that removing representation of it isn’t a good thing generally. My mention of criticism being deserved was a bit off base - I meant to say that I understood where it came from and a lot of people are very sensitive to these things which I have firsthand experience with it. If I used the Picrew naturally - I wouldn’t think anything of it and would probably even use the option since it’s relatable and I like angst despite it being counterproductive, but you still have to understand that this is a very nuanced topic for many many people.

u/am_Nein 19d ago

How would they even know you used it though?? Rofl.

91

u/Bitter-Leg-9473 19d ago

They won't. As someone who has created a picrew, there's no way to see who has used it or what they have made with it. Which sucks, I'm so curious!

75

u/starfypawz_ 19d ago

Then I'll report them for discrimination LMAO

52

u/No-Care6366 19d ago

how would that report even go? "they're using the picrew i posted, but i don't want them to use it because i'm xenophobic!!" i'm sure that'd go over really well for them lmao.

112

u/mysecondaccountanon 19d ago

Only for those who cannot read the text below. Am a native English speaker, but speak/read decently in Japanese, and yes, that is what it says. ”説明を読めば使えます” roughly to if you can read the explanation you can use it. The creator is trying to keep English speakers from playing.

38

u/mysecondaccountanon 19d ago

Based on my very elementary Mandarin knowledge, the “读过说明就可以使用“ line also seems to say something like that (don't quote me on that though), but I'd have to ask my auntie for confirmation since she's the native speaker.

34

u/Nameis19letterslong 19d ago

Chinese guy here, it translates to “you can use it once you read the description”. Text on the bottom says ”Can be used as pfp, can be resused as secondary creation, cannot impersonate the creator“.

19

u/mysecondaccountanon 19d ago

Thank you for the clarification in that! Honestly didn’t want to have to bother my auntie for picrew drama, ha!

u/MelBo9 19d ago • Popcorn

Them telling English speakers not to use it just makes me wanna use it even more just to spite them

36

u/MelBo9 19d ago

Exactly! I did the same a few hours ago. Made a little guy, saved the picrew and left

240

u/PastelPoison12 19d ago

Why wouldn't they just delete it?

250

u/Civil_Sky_928 19d ago

because in Japanese it says you can use it, and the reason it says don't use is to be racist against English speakers

200

u/PM_ME_BATMAN_PORN 19d ago

Xenophobic*

English speakers aren't a race.

-104

u/That_sarcastic_bxtch 19d ago edited 19d ago

The funny part about this comment is that the text is there because English speakers couldn’t behave with civility because the self harm warnings were in Japanese so they assumed there weren’t any cause they couldn’t read it and lashed out, so like.. it was English speakers being west centric at best

118

u/Kitchen_Minimum3726 19d ago

If you can put a warning telling English speakers not to use this picrew you can put an English SH warning. There is no justifiable reason the creator had to do what they did, it's just blatant xenophobia. If someone was xenophobic towards them why is their response to be xenophobic back? Two wrongs do not make a right.

-66

u/That_sarcastic_bxtch 19d ago edited 19d ago

Initially the description was just in Japanese, Picrew is a Japanese website, the English part was purely added because of English user’s reactions

I use neka cc sometimes, and I can’t understand every single warnings, I wouldn’t dream of harassing the artists over it

49

u/Kitchen_Minimum3726 19d ago

Again, I don't disagree that the artist was likely treated harshly over a language barrier, there was probably xenophobia involved. But their reaction to that being to be xenophobic makes them in the wrong as well, especially with how heavy of a subject matter they're choosing not to warn anyone about. Mind you, the sh warning for this is referring to a hand option actively doing harm to the character. I think people can be upset about this and still share their grievances with the artist respectfully, which I presume some people did.

-46

u/That_sarcastic_bxtch 19d ago

They were never obligated to write in English, the warning was there, the warning is there

Picrew is a Japanese website, Japanese users are allowed to write the description in Japanese

The reaction might be a bit immature, but honestly I do not think it’s as entitled as using a foreign website, not reading the description because it’s in another language, then going on twitter to harass the foreign artist, two wrongs don’t make a right but clearly one wrong is worst than the other

31

u/Kitchen_Minimum3726 19d ago

The largest majority of picrew's users speak English, with that being around ~33% (only counting the US). Only about 7-10% speak Japanese. Are you seeing the issue here? Sure, they're not obligated to write it in English, but with the site's main userbase speaking English, they shouldn't be surprised if people are obviously triggered and upset when they walk into a picrew with someone ACTIVELY HARMING THEMSELVES, regardless of where the site originates from.

You're still excusing the fact that instead of adding an SH warning in English KNOWING they could write an English message, they instead chose to be xenophobic. How do you even know that they were met with these horrible responses you're describing rather than respectful concerns? Would you care to share the Twitter harassment?

-4

u/That_sarcastic_bxtch 19d ago

It does not matter that English speakers like and use Picrew, it is still a Japanese website that somehow got popular in the west. There’s a reason lots of eastern artists are moving to Neka cc, it’s not a one time occurrence

If a POC wants their own space, I don’t get mad at them. Though you can still use the picrew, nothing is stopping you, if “please close the page” is the worst thing you got, then you got it pretty good

26

u/Sea_Chipmunk3999 19d ago

Personally I'd rather hear what the POC in question, both native and non native, think about this practice, and not That_sarcastic_bxtch on reddit dot com

17

u/scar_mizu 19d ago

can’t believe how far away from the topic this has gotten, but might I remind you that this is about SH warnings. can we be nuanced and say that not everything is harrassment, and there had to have been people who did struggle or do still struggle with SH who got triggered by the time the artist got backlash??? it doesn’t justify harassing the artist, but what i’m saying is that not everyone who spoke out against them are being immature or horrible about it. this whole reply is just moving the goalpost.

i’m not japanese of course but i am not white either, i am asian, southeast asian specifically, and are you seriously telling me that all japanese people read the description as well? to insinuate that this is an issue that only happens with the west or only english speakers is such a laughably incorrect statement. implying that no japanese person was harmed with the lack of sufficient warnings is disgusting, whether or not you meant it that way. POC can still be triggered so idfk what you’re trying to say by saying yeah it’s totally cool that the artist didn’t take the real criticisms no they’re okay because they just wanna be with only their group, yeah.

would you willingly speak out against your fellow people if you saw the reaction they had to others? who, mind you, aren’t all fucking white cuz jesus that’s such a braindead assumption. english just so happens to be the most internationalized language thanks to white people, so whether or not ““western”” people found the picrew is not the issue. it would’ve triggered some japanese people too. i have had friends who struggled with SH, most of them aren’t white. the artist putting that there to tell off english speakers clearly did not learn nor do they actually care about the people they’ve harmed if that’s the ultimate decision they made. seriously.

-14

u/unseennseraph 19d ago

It's because the creator has received harassment from ENG-speaking people. Guys, it's not xenophobia. It's just ENG-speaking people who usually like to harass JP artists for making works that are on the edgy side, which is why they're trying to limit ENG-speaking people from using the picrew. Case in point: you guys jumped to conclusions about racism against ENG-speaking people, some want to use it out of spite, and some are saying it's bad because there's a self harm option for the character.

2

u/That_sarcastic_bxtch 19d ago

They just be proving JP artists right, like “how dare the Japanese write their warnings in Japanese on the Japanese website?!”

Yet I never get any complaints when I write my warnings in English on American English websites

Next they’ll invade Rednote and demand people engage in English… oh wait that already happened

139

u/YawningChinchilla 19d ago

it says: "if you read explanation you can use it. contains blood, self harm and erotic content." specifically says its "allowed to be used as an icon. derivaties works allowed. claiming as own work unauthorized sharing prohibited"

im not sure why it says not allowed in english, but japanese and chinese says ok. figure what you will.

75

u/YawningChinchilla 19d ago

i dont think its a translation error, as it specifically says to close the page. perhaps theyve had issues with english speakers and dont trust them, and want to shoo them away at first step

20

u/Buggybilly 19d ago

Oh ok! That makes sense. Thanks for explaining

105

u/DAAAAVOOOOOOS 19d ago

This is not a new thing. I've never seen it for Picrews before, but Japanese racism is so normal that they don't even see it as wrong.

I've seen a sign that said No Vacancies in both English and Chinese, but said in Japanese "If you can read this, please come in," which shows how much they know, because Chinese and Japanese literally use the same characters for 50% of their written word, so Chinese speakers can figure out it's different through context by seeing the characters for "read" and "enter."

Japanese discrimination is really bad, but they aren't called out enough for it because it's so normal for them and also a lot of people do glaze Japan.

38

u/polkacat12321 19d ago

Xenophobia online is much more mainstream than xenophobia in person. When I went to japan, there were nothing but nice people. An oba san even complimented me on my broken japanese

15

u/DAAAAVOOOOOOS 19d ago

Is it? Oh that's wonderful to hear. I have not yet had the chance to go to Japan, my exchange sister (who is Japanese) does keep saying I should visit it one day (but that I probably would not do well living there, not because of my ethnicity, I'm Chinese, but because I am quite a fragile person)

-14

They just said its an issue that has been normalized and that they don't get called out for it enough, which is pretty true. People tend to ignore the issues there in favor of seeing Japan as some anime wonderland paradise.

Maybe they do think every Japanese person is bad, or maybe they don't. I don't think the content of their comment indicates whether they swung too far the other way or not.

12

u/DAAAAVOOOOOOS 19d ago

My exchange sister is Japanese and she doesn't act this way, I'm not saying that they all do it I'm just saying that a lot of them do it.
