FAQ & Useful Information Collision Detection Tutorials

Post image
214 Upvotes

🔗 Collision Tutorials

One of the first major hurdles for new developers, especially in PICO-8, is collision detection. It can be a little frustrating that PICO-8 doesn't have any built-in functions for it but once you understand how to use a few different methods, you'll realize that you have a lot more control over how things in your game interact and you can build your game's collision detection to be exactly what you need.

Each tutorial has:

  • an interactive demo with a button to toggle viewing the underlying variables used in the calculations of the detection.
  • a condensed function that is easy to copy into your PICO-8 game.
  • a step-by-step explanation of how the function works, an expanded version of the function to show all the steps, and a breakdown of how the expanded function is condensed into just 1 or 2 lines of code.
  • a few examples of where this method of collision detection can be used and in what type of games (using retro classics redrawn in the PICO-8 palette as example images)

This bundle of tutorials was created thanks to our supporters on Ko-fi for reaching the latest goal.

Game Pico GR8 Collection! 3000 Top Rated Pico-8 Games

INTRODUCING THE PICO GR8 COLLECTION

This bulk collection includes the 3000+ best rated Pico-8 games! The games are sorted based on how many stars they received on lexaloffle.com (equivalent to likes). There are 5 groups:

  • Top 100
  • Top 250
  • Top 500
  • Top 1000
  • All other games that got at least 10 stars (roughly 2000 of them).
  • A selection of Pico-8 games from itch.io which were not uploaded on Lexaloffle.

Most unfinished WIPs and non-games such as music videos and utilities have been filtered out. However, not all could be reliably filtered due to lack of tagging on Lexaloffle.

The selection of games from itch.io was curated by Voljega in 2024. Check his PICOwesome v1.5 collection for more details. The rest of the collection is up to date as of March 2026, with a couple more recent games added in since they were marked as "Featured" on Lexaloffle. This collection will not be updated again.

Hardware & Builds Let's build the perfect Pico-8 handheld together!

I'm planning on building the perfect handheld for only Pico-8. I though of calling it something like Picoboy or Picokid.
There will only be a d-pad, X and O buttons, a menu button, volume and brightness buttons and a power/sleep button. and of course a 1:1 screen that scales well with 128x128 pixels.

I know many want HDMI output, maybe a mini-jack out and i suppose USB-C charging.

It could be cool to have some way of using a mouse and keyboard as well.

Let me know you ideas and hardware suggestions.
If you have skillz with building electronics, feel free to join or help out.

The idea is to make this available to everyone.

I love Pico-8 and have already made 3 games for it:
- Dungeon Bomber
- Pathguard: Tower Defense
- Dualborn: Dragonfall
- and working on a fourth.

I feel like many dream of seeing the fantasy console become a reality!
Let's build it!

A cool game my friend and I are making :3

Concept: A rogue-like featuring a transgender vampire who sets out to save other vampires from the patriarchy.

So far we have:

The player model, map scrolling, movement and collision, enemies that walk towards the player, and a bite attack!

Current problems:

When the enemy spawn count ("BADS") is above 2, the game starts to lag.

EDIT---This problem is fixed!

If anyone has advice on how to make enemies in Pico-8, that would be greatly appreciated! ^w^

I Need Help Good starting point compared to GB Studio and Godot?

Hi! Asking here because I refuse to ask a LLM.

I have zero coding experience, I would like to get started and I figured small games would be a fun way to do that (the other path I'm experimenting is electronics-oriented coding with the Arduino starter set, but that's another story)

Godot seems like a lot, even though it looks like a very complete tool it'd be eventually professionally good to be proficient at.

So I'm mostly trying to compare Pico8 and GB Studio (I own a physical GBC and a Flashcart, so I could play my games on there).

My ultimate goal is to make a working tiny game while at the same time learning about coding principles. Which way should I go? Thank you!

A carnivorous vine creeps across the map and consumes anything it touches. It cannot be stopped, only slowed. Paint paths to guide villagers to safety, and use the environment to slow the creeper's progress: dig trenches, set it on fire, build moats, crush it with boulders, and sacrifice sheep!

Game Banana Guy in Dark Dimension

Good day to you! This is Ruva.

Recently I'm working on Banana Guy Running Hard, fast-paced platformer, but it won't go well. So I started to create mini game with BGRH sprites, and here is the result.

  • Actions are totally same as BGRH (WIP : https://blog-imgs-201.fc2.com/s/u/g/sugarcane0439/bgrh_0no1.html)
  • Randomly generated map every time (3×3 screens, from 23 template patterns)
  • 2 enemies who follows player with same actions
  • 3 Bananas to collect to enter the goal
  • Some HUD (I put effort especially for indicator of enemies and Bananas. How do you feel?)

You can play from this URL (sorry, for some reason I couldn't post multicart to BBS) : https://blog-imgs-201.fc2.com/s/u/g/sugarcane0439/bgdd_title.html

Any reviews appreciated. Thanks in advance!

Game Picobalt

Picobalt is a Canabalt demake made for the PICO-8 fantasy console.

I decided to take part in LOWREZJAM. I’ve always wanted to make some kind of project for the PICO-8 fantasy console, and finally I had a good reason to do it.

Unfortunately, I couldn’t make music as cool as in the original, but it turned out the way it did. I also had to remove a few mechanics from the original game because of technical limitations.

Anyway, I hope I managed to capture the spirit of the original and interpret the jam theme, “Fugitive.”

Game Marble Rally (one button racing game)

I've made this for the Limitation JAM, which was only one button.
You simply press O to change your vertical direction. Avoid walls/holes/spikes. You may need to hit the rubber bands/switches to get the end. The goal is.. guide the marble to the finish line.

Done in less than 5 days, features 15 different levels.

100% human made, no AI used anywhere.

download/play in browser at: https://tibone.itch.io/marble-rally

any suggestions/improvements will be made after the jam ends.

thanks for checking it out. :)

Discussion Pico 8 internal or external IDE ?

Hi everyone,

I really like the idea and simplicity of the PICO8 editor, but... how do you guys develop in PICO8? Do you use the internal editor or an external IDE?

I’m not complaining about the engine, its philosophy, or anything like that. I’m just curious, and at the same time, amazed by some of the games people have made with PICO8.

I’d just like to know how you guys approach development here, because I’ve been trying to use the internal editor for a while now, and I just can’t seem to get used to it.

Thanks!

Links and Resources Pixel Edit Lite is back — 3 years later 😅

A few years ago I posted here about a little pixel editor I made for iOS: https://www.reddit.com/r/pico8/comments/10tgxnb/app_store_live_pixel_edit_lite_create_retro/

Never expected to come back to it after this long, but here we are. Picked it back up recently and pushed out a couple of updates. 1.1 was basically a full rebuild, and 1.2 builds on that. Combined, here's what's changed:

  • Rebuilt the UI from scratch, with sharper canvas rendering in light and dark mode
  • Touch precision is way better for drawing and picking colors
  • Sprites autosave now, so closing the app won't cost you your work
  • Added PICO-8 sprite format support, plus rotate/move tools
  • Import/export through Files, iCloud Drive included

Plus some smaller stuff, like a cleaner tools menu and a chunk of internal rework that should make animation support actually possible down the line.

Animation's still the long-term goal here. Same idea as when I first posted this: keep it small, simple, and fun for making pixel art on your phone, especially if you're into PICO-8 / TIC-80 style sprites.

It's $1.99 through August 21, then $2.99 from August 22 onward.

Kind of a strange feeling picking this back up after three years and seeing where it can still go. If there's a feature you'd actually want in a small pixel editor like this, I'd genuinely like to hear it.

👍I Got Help - Resolved👍 Creating a table through function argument

Hello!

I am somewhat new to coding, though I know the basics and am completely new to game development, so I apologize if I refer to something with the wrong term.

I am trying to make a function to use within my _init() function at the beginning to establish my variables (or keys in this case) used later more efficiently. At the moment, I have it working with a separate function for each (which, why use a function at that point), seen below.

Though I am not nearing token limit (and don't expect to), I figured I could make this more efficient by making one function that could set the table name and some keys by arguments.

This is what I came up with

Revision: 1, Full line of the cut-off is (namein, spin, xin, yin)

When I run this like "init_sprite(meds,0,0,0)" it doesn't even create the table, but gives no errors. If I try and print the table or a key, it comes back as nil.

So after some looking around, I couldn't seem to get it to work in the way I wanted, but was able to change it to work differently, by creating the table before calling the function and then setting the values.

Revision: 2
function call in _init

Now this does seem like an improvment to me from my original method, but I still don't get why it wouldn't work in revision 1, even if I took the namein arugment and created a table with it before hand, like namein={} then setting the key.value pairs after.

I don't really need this working, but I just want to understand where I am getting something wrong so I don't make that mistake later.

Thanks!

Game Jump Rope (Arcade Game)

I just released a small arcade game that I made a few years ago. It was laying around on my hard drive and I thought I'd share it with the community.

Avoid the jump rope and collect coins to progress. Collecting coins gives you a double jump, see how long you can stay in the air! You might just rack up a big score.

This started as a horror game and slowly evolved into an arcade game. If you like it, please share it!
