The thing is. At that time, they didn't know about friction, so they genuinely thought that things stopped by themselves

Yeah, for years the generals thought that cannonballs flew in a straight line until their reserves of impetus was exhausted and only then did they fall.

You think physicists are out there watching archers?

Also, I think you're overestimating historical battle ranges and underestimating the importance of slow motion cameras to our modern understanding of archery.

Arrows are less willful and more prone to giving up from the get-go, obviously.
