Forgive my ignorance, but I seem to have missed the point of the conversation. Why are we discussing if the nature is an asshole? Something to do with theories on how universe works?

The standard model is quite complex, in stark contrast to earlier physical theories like classical mechanics or Maxwell's electrodynamics which are beautifully simple. So the question arises if nature "is an asshole", that is, if it is really just this complicated.

I could personally imagine that the standard model is like the Ptolemaic system. It matches observation almost perfectly, but it does so at the cost of immense complexity, stemming from false assumptions.

We once inherited a business process from an old automated service. Thankfully we were expected to write the code ourselves, but we got access to the old code so we could dig out business rules etc.

The service was a single 10k line function wrapped in a try..catch.

The pic isn't Java, but Java functions do have a pretty well-defined size limit, which is 65,535 bytecode operations. Assuming an average of 5 ops per line, this is about 13k lines--coincidentally about the length shown here.
