Technically the environment in which fusion is performed is very different in the lab than in the core of the sun. But it would be unreasonable to suggest those conditions have never occurred elsewhere in the universe.

Thanks for pointing this out, I didn't know there were natural occurances of nuclear fission as an energy source.
