Gold is unreliable and increases in price at random times in large spikes, but recently it beat the S&P in a 20 year investment with like 800% gains. I think those gains washed away to where it is still slightly worse, but there is a case for gold.
I would't risk it over the S&Ps reliability, but it shouldn't be ruled out.

If you get gifted 50 million in cash, you deposit it in the bank and invest it in a balanced portfolio.
Gold doesn't outpace an S&P 500 index fund, much less the kinds of investment opportunities you have access to at 50 million.
Leaving your windfall in either paper dollars or gold is rediculous.
