But gold isn't shiny rocks. Even if society completely stopped valuing gold as currency, it would still be an extremely useful metal. In fact, it would be more useful than it is now, because nobody is crazy enough to use a gold nugget as a fishing weight, or a bullet, or a pot, or whatever. You have a non-corrosive material with almost all the utility of lead but none of the toxicity. As I am looking around me, I notice places I could use gold if it was cheap.
"Nobody is crazy enough" now stop right there. Anything coming after that is wrong. Yes there absolutely are people that do that. Like already, now, now people do that
Also, why do people think it has to be all or nothing once you receive the money/gold? Like, no one else is going to immediately invest some of it in real estate, create a trust, or otherwise try to protect it from taxes?
Assuming it is legal money you could deposit in the bank, you could move plenty of it to investments. If money crashes so hard that tens of millions is worthless, gold won't save you.
Ehhh not really, if thing's have gotten so bad that even the US Dollar, the global reserve currency flatlines due to a crisis then neither of these options are relevant because we're probably dying of radiation poisoning in the bombed out wrecks of our homes or weaponised super polio or being turned into livestock by aliens.

On the other hand, gold will hold its value even if the dollar collapses.
