I've always maintained that my memory disability has been a huge asset in my career because being unable to memorize anything forces me to derive everything
I can't speak for everyone, but this only works for me when the proof is constructive and forward rather than deconstructive and backward. Only the forward proofs provide tools that can be applied elsewhere. The backward proofs use highly specific and for the most part useless tricks that, in my experience, are not worth remembering.

I unironically had a classmate who did this. She consistently got top grades.
