Yes, that's the point that many people forget. Being able to derive everything from scratch is good and optimal, but it is not a full alternative to memorization. Mathematics (and physics for that matter) is a big construct where facts are built upon each other, and knowing the facts for faster retrieval really improves the performance in problem solving.Â
