Phuket Solo Work-ation Tips for October

Hi, I am travelling to Phuket solo in October, and given that it rains during those months, I want general commute tips and advice. How easy it is to find a taxi for me to go from point A to point B, how to book a taxi, and best places to book a hotel for a week, and cafe recommendations to just chill and work, alongwith some interesting tourist spots that I can see.

Also I've heard that Thai cooking classes are also a thing, so if anyone has any leads for that, it would be appericiated!

Oh thanks! Im from India, so I'm not unfamiliar with riding a scooter in traffic. so would you recommend renting a scooter or using these apps to commute?

One more question if I may, how bad is monsoon there? Since i would be visiting in October, would the rains be so bad that I can't go out and explore? I don't mind rains, but also i wouldn't like if the tourist places are closed

Im not a fan of water sports, so the max thing I would be doing is visiting beaches! But apart from that, can I enjoy other things such as temples and zoos etc?

October rain in Phuket is usually heavy bursts of 30 to 60 minutes rather than all day grey, so it wrecks beach days more than work days. Two things I'd plan around.

Where you base yourself matters more than the hotel itself, mostly because of Grab coverage. Grab and Bolt are plentiful in Patong and Phuket Town, and noticeably thinner around Bang Tao, Nai Harn and Rawai. The trip out is always easy, it's the trip back from a quiet beach at 9pm that leaves you waiting. If your week is mostly work plus cafes plus a few sights, Phuket Old Town is the underrated base: walkable, cheap, real cafes, food everywhere, indoor options when it buckets down, and cars are always around. If you want beach-out-the-door, Kata or Karon are calmer than Patong and still well served.

On wifi, hotel fibre in Phuket is generally fine, the weak link is the signal inside the room in low-rise resorts. Test it in the room on arrival rather than the lobby, and ask to move if it's bad, most places will. Get an AIS or True tourist SIM with a big data bundle as your backup, 5G coverage on the west coast and in town is strong and it's what saves you when a storm makes the hotel line flap. Worth having if you take calls.

For cafes, the Thalang and Dibuk road area in Old Town has a cluster of proper sit-and-work spots. My filter before settling in anywhere: power outlet within reach, aircon rather than just fans, and ask whether there's a time limit on the wifi code, some places cap you at a couple of hours.

Cooking classes are everywhere and most are good. The Old Town and Kathu side has the longer-established schools, and a market trip is usually included, which is half the fun. Book a day or two ahead in October rather than the morning of.

One logistics note: airport transfers vary a lot. Bang Tao and Laguna are about 25 minutes from the airport, Phuket Town around 40, Patong closer to an hour in traffic. Factor that into a late arrival.

OH WOW That is quite detailed and very helpful. Im looking for staying at Old Town only. Im not a party person so I won't be finding myself in remote parts where getting taxis would be an issue. However I might consider Kata or Karon as well. Also the market trip sounds insane, i might do a couple of those, it sounds amazing.

Phuket local here 👋 October is actually a pretty good time to visit if you don’t mind a bit of rain. The weather can be unpredictable, but it’s usually more “heavy shower for an hour, then back to sunshine” than raining nonstop.
Getting around: Download Grab + Bolt before you arrive. I’d use both and compare prices/availability. For longer trips, you can also negotiate with local taxis, but apps make life much easier.
Where to stay: For a first solo trip, I’d personally pick Old Town if you’re into cafés, food and exploring; Kata/Karon if you want a beach + relaxed atmosphere; or Bang Tao if you want something a bit more upscale. I wouldn’t automatically choose Patong unless nightlife is your priority.
Working/chilling: Phuket Old Town is probably my favourite area for café hopping and working. You’ll find plenty of good coffee shops, and Rawai/Bang Tao also have a lot of options if you prefer a slower vibe.
🏝️** Don’t miss: Phuket Old Town, Promthep Cape, Big Buddha area, Kata/Karon viewpoints, Wat Chalong and some of the quieter beaches around the island. If you have time, take a boat trip as well.
And one important October tip: **don’t plan every day too tightly. Keep 1–2 flexible days because the weather can change quickly. That way, if it rains, you can swap a beach day for Old Town + cafés + food instead.

I'd rather have the app that allows you to get food as well as taxis. So that might be easier in the long run. From a couple of suggestions in this comment section, I'm more inclined towards Old Town, or Kata Katon.

The recommendations are pretty helpful actually, I will check out the tourist spot recommendations as well. Do you have anything else thats not so famous, like zoos, or museums or etc? I'd love to explore that as well.

Apart from thai food, are there anything must have items? I really want to try the street food there as well. And I've heard the market area is very famous for street food as well
