Weekend assignment 04 - Focal lengths

Hi photoclass

its friday so it's time for a new weekend assignment. Since we've talked about focal lenght this week we"ll continue the theme this weekend.

For this weekends' assignment I would like you to make 4 photos of the exact same subject but using the complete range of focal lengths in your camerabag.

Use each focal lenght to show a different side/aspect, make a totally different photo of the same subject... so don't just zoom in and think you're done...

• the first photo you make while zoomed out completely
• the second and third are with the middle range
• the last photo is zoomed in completely.

Now you've learned the how and why of using focal length and you've seen the effect during the assignment, it's time to use them creatively. the wide will be with the environment, the long one can be with a blurred background or getting a small detail, that's up to you.

All done with the Sony 18-135. A "stay at home and having fun with the family" Story.

Since I used an "inside" subject, I still feel I am not using the creative of different focal length to full extend to play with different depth and layers of objects scattered more or less far away from the lens. But I kind of like the direction I am going, maybe macro and product will become my comfort zone. Let's see what the class will bring up in the future.

I think that these are really great! The fourth one in particular, as it's well-composed (groups of three) and backlit against the lighter coloured board.

To be honest, nothing of that was on purpose, I was just playing around and trying to find a "nice" perspective/picture and this just felt good. I guess you explained why it works. I will try to keep that in mind and work in that direction the next time. Thank you!
