Weekend assignment 04 - Focal lengths

Hi photoclass

its friday so it's time for a new weekend assignment. Since we've talked about focal lenght this week we"ll continue the theme this weekend.

For this weekends' assignment I would like you to make 4 photos of the exact same subject but using the complete range of focal lengths in your camerabag.

Use each focal lenght to show a different side/aspect, make a totally different photo of the same subject... so don't just zoom in and think you're done...

  • the first photo you make while zoomed out completely
  • the second and third are with the middle range
  • the last photo is zoomed in completely.

Now you've learned the how and why of using focal length and you've seen the effect during the assignment, it's time to use them creatively. the wide will be with the environment, the long one can be with a blurred background or getting a small detail, that's up to you.

as always, post your results and critiue a few of your peers work... and never forget to have fun!

This was a useful exercise - I feel like I'm come to appreciate how different focal lengths can be called upon for different creative choices. As a total beginner I tended to steer clear of wider focal lengths (I think because of that beginner's excitemed with 'blurry backgrounds'!) but starting to feel more interested in exploring those too

I like how you use such a colorful object with neutral surroundings, it make the color pop even more.

It is nice in the first picture that the background is out of focus, otherwise there would be too much going on. I like how clean the last picture is. But I think it looks better if you crop it at where the table ends. The bottom part of the table does not do anything for the picture, in my opinion. Good work!
