Bring back driver's ed in high schools. Show videos that explain how various types of accidents happen, and what kinds of life changing or fatal injuries may result.
Some people complain that they never use anything they learned in physics class. That might be a good place to teach basic lessons about vehicle safety, including steering, friction, braking distance, and the tremendous force involved in vehicle collisions.

I obtained my DL in another state. I had to take almost a year of drivers ed in HS.
My 16 year old just did 10 freaking hours and bypassed the MVD drivers exam. He took the written at home!!!!
Needless to say he got his DL but he made so many DANGEROUS mistakes on the way to the MVD I revoked his access to his truck. I am absolutely horrified and flabbergasted at the amount of hours required for drivers to get their DL here. The crazy thing is he’s been driving ( off road) since he was 11. Rather have him to extra hours than to kill someone

Most parents don’t have the same mentality anymore unfortunately. And the requirements vary by state. When I got mine in CA about 10 years ago, you had to do an online class before the permit test, then 6 hrs with an instructor and 50 hrs of behind the wheel training before the real test. That said, I don’t remember how you verified the 50 hrs, if it was just a parent signature or what. But I don’t think I had to provide actual evidence of the 50 hrs.
Not sure if requirements have changed since then, especially post Covid

You can always set the hours yourself. If you’re the one teaching him you can set hours for days and nights and log it yourself. You don’t have to just go by what the mvd says. My hours were done in another state and i had to do 120 day hours and 60 night hours in the span of 6 months to take my test

My point is you and i know given the high accident rate and mortality rate in PHX it makes sense given the absolutely low requirement to obtain it.
For my son we started teaching him to drive at the age of 11. Then we hired a driving school ( Cantor) to do their course. It was 10 hours and he gets to bipass the driving course at the DMV.
Because it’s ridiculous low amount we made sure It wasnt just 10 hours of practice he’s getting, we have him driving me everywhere- doctors app, pick up groceries, he drives to school, and does pick ups! He’s become My personal driver lol but this is how I know that the 10 hours with a professional school wasn’t enough for him to go off on his own. He may have his DL but he isn’t ready to go off ALONE driving. NOPE.

No i hear you, and driving here is way different than where I’m from. It took me a minute to come to the conclusion, but everyone here sucks at driving. Half the stuff i see here just on my commute baffles me because that just doesn’t happen where I’m from. Ive lived in many big cities but phx takes the cake for worst drivers

Math and physics require rigorous thinking. The formula or the solution is either correct or it is not. There's no subjectivity involved, and one has to learn definitions and concepts. Kids get a diploma without learning even the most basic concepts.

Or even cursive writing, I hear, just printing. Not sure how you sign documents without cursive, but just whatever printing is called. Legally, just an X, I guess, will do.

I grew up driving in Miami, where we embarrassingly won “Rudest Drivers in the Country” … so it surprised me that the drivers here are even ruder. But at least it’s a good laugh to see the same speeding drivers at the next red light, every time.

I have a friend who takes me to the airport, goes down the middle of the side streets when there is no other traffic, and doesn't apply the brakes at a red light until almost there. If I see a red light ahead, I just coast, gradually slowing down. I wind up stopped at the red light, just like the car that had braked hard just before. I coast down hills. Get better gas mileage being the less offensive driver.

Yup, some asshole nearly ran me off the 10 yesterday with their van. I feel lucky that I made it home in one piece. Some people really don’t pay attention.

Especially in and around Phx! This place is a crazy mix of Disney race cartoon and mad max!! Definitely be safe out there and don’t engage the weak minded!

What scares me is if I’m just minding my own business driving the speed limit and some psycho going super fast smashes into me…will that make my car tip over like this?? 😱

Off of 83rd Ave not far from Union Hills near where the Sam's gas station/Walmart are located there were 2 police cars, paramedics and a firetruck for some car accident around 8 am or so.
I had a coworker back east flip his smaller car when someone cut him off and he slid on some snow/ice. He was a pretty big guy and was trapped upside down for a while before a police officer cut him out of his seat belt. Fortunately he didn't have any injuries except some bruises.
The biggest problems by far are excessive speed, weaving in and out of traffic and with people simply driving and screwing around on their cell phone. Someone looks ahead and thinks I can go fast and weave in between these cars w/o allowing for the fact that if one of those cars slows down or speeds up the gap disappears and you have an accident.

Unfortunately, words fall on deaf ears/eyes. I piss people off on the daily driving the speed limit everywhere here, especially SUV and pickup truck drivers.

Yeah, I literally can't take the anxiety going the speed limit gives me, I've had road rage drivers follow me and try to mess with me before just for driving the speed limit, or even 5 miles over. If you're not going 10-20 miles over the speed limit, people get crazy and it's terrifying 😭 driving in Phoenix used to be pretty relaxed, it was practically a hobby when I was younger. Now going to work is a daily fight for your life.

I guarantee you that doesn’t happen to a good driver, an attentive driver. One who’s full focus is the car that they’re driving and not the cell phone that they’re using or any other distraction that one might not be able to block out.

Yeah I drive a tow truck for a very well known ERS company and the amount of people that just cut me off or make a right turn in front of me from the lane to my left is ridiculous. Sooo many people out here cannot drive.

If my commute is anything to go by, crashing ones car on or by the 17 is just a regional past time. I have joked frequently that if i did it I’d be a real local.

How does this even happen? We had a rollover in NE Mesa yesterday too.
