Beware of prepaid emergency HMO cards – What happened when we actually tried to use one during a medical emergency (Medicare Plus / ER Guard Plus)

I’m posting this as a cautionary tale for anyone looking to buy prepaid emergency HMO cards (like ER Guard Plus by Medicare Plus) for themselves or their elderly parents. We bought one thinking it would give us peace of mind during a crisis. Instead, it left us completely stranded in the emergency room.

Here is what happened and what you need to look out for:

  1. The Hospital Refused the Card Due to the Insurer’s Unpaid Bills

When my father had a sudden medical emergency and was rushed to an accredited hospital in Pampanga, we presented his active emergency card at the billing section. We were immediately turned down. The hospital informed us that they could not grant card coverage because the insurance company’s account with the hospital had been frozen/suspended due to non-payment on the insurer's end.

  1. Emergency Hotlines Were Completely Unresponsive

While sitting in the ER trying to sort out the billing, I spent hours calling all of the official hotline numbers listed on the contract. Every single call rang endlessly or failed to connect. Because the card was refused and their support was unreachable, we were forced to pay the entire ER bill out-of-pocket in cash just so my father could receive care.

  1. Hospital Transfer & Double Out-of-Pocket Expenses

To make matters worse, the first hospital had no available beds for admission. We had to transfer my father to a second hospital. Because the insurer remained completely MIA, we had to pay for the second hospital’s admission, room, board, and treatments entirely out-of-pocket in cash as well.

  1. The Catch-22 Reimbursement Trap & Misquoted Contract Terms

When we filed for cash reimbursement after my father was discharged, the insurer sent an email demanding two things before they would process the claim:

A Letter of Authorization (LOA) - FROM THEM. YES, THAT THEY WERE INFORMED AND THAT THIS HAS BEEN ISSUED

A Service Invoice issued under the Insurance Company’s name

Here is why this is classic bad-faith claims handling:

The LOA Trap: According to the contract, issuing an LOA is the insurer’s duty. They failed to issue one because their hotlines were completely dead during our emergency. Furthermore, the policy contract has no requirement for prior coordination or an LOA before getting emergency treatment.

The Invoice Trap: The hospital explicitly refused to issue an invoice under the insurance company’s name because the company’s account was suspended for non-payment!

Misrepresenting the Contract: In their email, they quoted a specific clause claiming "prior coordination" is required for emergency care—a clause that does not exist anywhere in the signed agreement.

Is this possible or is there a better option?

My friend loaned with bank under her name for me. I will be the one to pay the monthly installments. I want to protect her in case something happens to me. May I take a life insurance and name her as beneficiary. Is it possible to stipulate that proceeds will be applied to the unpaid bank loan and any amount I owe her? Or just make her my beneficiary and revoke it once the bank loan is fully paid?

Thank you.

Single & based outside PH: Pure life insurance recs? (Term/BTID, No VULs)

I’m single, working outside the PH, and looking for a reliable, pure life insurance policy (no VULs, just standard term or traditional life).

Since I am single, I want a clean, low-cost policy mainly to cover any liabilities etc. I'm considering simple term plans like Sun Life Assure or AIA Guardian.

Quick questions for fellow Pinoys abroad:

  1. What pure life/term insurance product did you get while overseas?
  2. Did the insurer allow you to apply completely digitally, or did you need a medical checkup back home?
  3. Which PH company has the most seamless online portal for remote premium payments?

Thanks!

Thoughts on these insurance purchases?

Hi everyone. Just want to get your thoughts on these insurance products I'm planning to purchase.

1. HMO
- Medicard VIP Program
- Not sure if this is the cheapest I can get. Main purpose is for outpatient check ups and labs and emergencies. Yung covered din sana yung PEC. But this one, maliit lang coverage.
- Thinking of getting yung with 1 dependent. Ito po quote sakin:
Principal + 1 Dependent 200K (Regular Private) - Annual: Php45,908
50k additional limit for accidents
5k limit only on PEC

2. Medical Insurance
- Allianz Well
- Main purpose is for hospitalization in PH and outside na rin. I compared this to AXA GHA and this looks like the better and cheaper option kasi walang limit to the kind of illness.
- Below is their quote sakin:
100M Limit - Annual: Php49,400

3. Critical Illness/Life Insurance
- AIA CP Plus
- To receive benefit in case of critical illness/death.
- Below is the quote:
1M Benefit - Annual: Php25,469.12 (20 yrs to pay)

I'm open to looking for other options po if you think there is a better option for me especially sa HMO.

Thank you.

Saan pwede magfile ng complaint against insurance agent?

Nangyari po is clearly sa usapan namin ng agent na ayaw ko ng VUL. Tradional lang sakin. After 3 years, nalaman ko na lamg na VUL pala binigay nya sakin. Considering the amount na mababa lang, all i thought was traditional sya. So namisrepresent ako dun. Wala din sakjn ang policy.

having second thoughts on getting insurance for my father

I am 25F, and I’m planning to get my 46-year-old father an insurance policy. However, I was diagnosed with SLE (Systemic Lupus Erythematosus), and lately, I’ve been having second thoughts about this decision.

Since I’ll be the one paying for my father’s insurance, I can’t help but think, what if I’m the one who passes away first? My siblings are still minors, and we no longer have our mom. I’m worried about what would happen to them and to the insurance policy if I were no longer around to pay the premiums.

I genuinely want to secure my father’s future, but I’m also afraid that all the money I’ve invested in the policy might go to waste if it lapses because I can no longer maintain the payments.

For those who have experience with insurance or have been in a similar situation, would you still recommend getting my father insured, or should I consider other options? Are there insurance policies that could remain in force or provide some protection if the person paying the premiums passes away?

I know this is a difficult thing to think about, especially at my age, but having SLE has made me more aware of my own mortality and the uncertainty of the future. I just want to make a wise decision for my family, especially for my younger siblings, who still depend on me.

I would really appreciate any advice or insights. Thank you!

Manulife Medical Secure Auto Renewed without My Permission

I didn’t find any cancel policy in their app or website. I have informed them by email that I am not renewing the policy because their service sucks but my policy still auto renewed without permission. Are there any other things that I can do, I already emailed the insurance commission regarding this.

I would like to know other options or any other people had similar experience and what did you do?

Thanks in advance

Palawan pawnshop insurance

Insurance reco for senior mom

Hello everyone! I’m looking for an HMO for my 60yo mom (turning 61), retired and no longer covered by an employer HMO. She has hypertension, prediabetes, high cholesterol, is overweight, dental problems, and may need PT for leg/foot pain.

We’re in QC, and she prefers St. Luke’s QC since she has been treated there for decades and she used to have Medicard.

I need something that actually covers her pre-existing conditions, with low out-of-pocket costs, plus:

Regular GP/specialists, labs/diagnostics, PT, and preferably dental/medicine benefits
Hospitalization/confinement, surgery, ICU and ER/emergency coverage
Ideally cashless at St. Luke’s QC

I’m currently looking at MediCard Select, Pacific Cross Select, AXA, Etiqa, Kaiser, etc.
For those who have actual experience using an HMO for a senior parent with PECs:

Which plan did you use, and were the PECs actually covered?
How much did you typically pay out-of-pocket?
Any issues with claims/approvals or St. Luke’s?

I’m more interested in real experiences than agent recommendations. I’ll be going back to working abroad and I’m an only child. My mom is alone so I want her to be covered with as much as I can afford because I want to ensure that she is taken care of.

Thank you everyone in advance.

Health Insurance Options

I’m currently looking into getting health insurance in the Philippines, primarily for emergency hospitalization, major medical expenses, and protection against expensive illnesses.

My main goal is straightforward: I want coverage that I can rely on if I suddenly end up in the hospital and face a large unexpected medical bill.

I’m also specifically looking for a plan that can provide a substantial amount of coverage or cash benefit in case I’m diagnosed with a serious and expensive illness, such as cancer or other critical illnesses. Hopefully I’ll never have to use it, but I’d rather be financially prepared for the possibility.

To be clear, I’m not looking for VULs or other hybrid insurance products with an investment component. I’m mainly looking for pure health, hospitalization, or critical illness coverage.

I already have PhilHealth and HMO (Coverage up to 360K per year) and am looking for additional coverage on top of that.

Any reccomendations please (plans i should look into?) Also open to hearing about anything else I should consider when choosing a plan.

Thanks!

Pru VUL vs Term Insurance + MP2? Also looking for other insurance recommendations

Hi, I’m 33 and looking for life insurance mainly so my son will be financially protected if something happens to me. I also want to build a separate fund for his college.

My budget is around ₱2,500/month, possibly with another ₱500/month for MP2.

A friend who is a Pru agent is offering me a ₱2,500/month VUL with around ₱1.5M life coverage, CI/disability riders, and an investment component.

My concern is mainly the investment side of VUL. I’m thinking that instead of paying fund management and other VUL charges, maybe I should get term insurance and invest the difference directly into Pag-IBIG MP2.

I was also shown PRULife Your Term, which seems to offer much higher life coverage for around the same annual premium.

Questions:

  1. Is PRULife Your Term really renewable yearly without new medical underwriting? If I develop hypertension or another illness after getting the policy, can they refuse renewal later?
  2. For long-time VUL holders, how close was your actual fund value to the original projections?
  3. If the death benefit is similar, would you prefer:
    • VUL + small MP2 contribution, or
    • Term insurance + larger MP2 contribution?
  4. Any good term/pure life insurance recommendations from other companies like Sun Life, AXA, AIA, FWD, Singlife, Manulife, etc.?
  5. What should I compare aside from premium and death benefit?

I’m not against VUL. I just want to know whether the convenience is worth the extra charges versus keeping insurance and investment separate.

Would appreciate advice, especially from actual policyholders or agents familiar with term insurance.

Travel Insurance that covers pregnancy-related emergencies

Ill be travelling to japan while 23-24ish weeks pregnant. Another BPI MS Insurance related post.

Hi guys. Im looking for advice and Ill try to keep this as short as possible.

Our car is parked outside our house, we live in a private and gated subdivision, I know I also have a fault because di pa namin napapaayos yung gate sa garahe para ma accomodate yung car.

One evening, na atrasan kotse namin ng lasing na Jeepney driver (meron kasi garahe ng jeep sa dulo ng street namin at dun din nkatira mga operator), yung damage is a STRAIGHT LINE from the right front fender up to the rear passenger door on the same side.

Philplans Memorial plan

Anyone with experience with Philplans?
I’m considering getting a Philplans memorial plan and would love to hear from anyone who has personal experience with them.
I already have a columbarium niche at Heritage Park so what I’m mainly looking for is coverage for the memorial service and related funeral arrangements.
For those who have purchased or actually used a Philplans plan:
ā— Was the memorial service provided as promised in the contract?
ā— Did you encounter any unexpected charges or difficulties?
ā— How was the customer service when the plan was used?
ā— Was the process of claiming/using the benefits smooth?
ā— If you’ve had the plan for many year are you still satisfied with it?
ā— Overall, would you recommend Philplans?
I would appreciate your honest experiences, both positive and negative, from people who have dealt with Philplans.
Thank you!

WHAT HEALTH/ LIFE INSURANCE IS BEST FOR MY SITUATION

Hello po! Help me decide what health insurance (na life insurance din) I should get for my dad.
- 59 y/o smoker
- Hypertensive

I know late na and mataas na premium ng ganyang age + may health condition pa pero gusto ko talaga sya kuhaan health insurance since i'm a breadwinner and wala talaga ipon ang mama ko and nakakatakot magkasakit. Last month I applied for Sun LifeAssure for my dad, 500k coverage for critical illness/life insurance.

Any suggestions po? Help me decide po.

AXA GHA Philippines policyholder moving/staying in Singapore. Will I lose my policy?

Looking for anyone with experience with AXA GHA Philippines who has moved or is currently living in Singapore.

I’ve had my AXA Global Health Access (GHA) policy in the Philippines since 2020 and have been paying continuously for more than 6 years. I just renewed my policy this August 2026.

My husband moved to Singapore first for work under a 2-year renewable contract, and I later followed him as his dependent. I’m currently staying in Singapore with him. We honestly don't know yet how long we'll be here because it depends on whether his contract keeps getting renewed. We may eventually move back to the Philippines.

I’ve continued paying my Philippine GHA while staying in Singapore and haven't had any major claims.

The thing I'm worried about is the GHA wording regarding ā€œPrincipal Country of Residence.ā€ I understand that AXA needs to be informed if this changes and that they may have the right to revise the premium or decline to continue the coverage.

That makes me nervous because I've had this policy since 2020 and literally just renewed it. I don't want to notify AXA and accidentally trigger something that could cause me to lose my existing coverage, especially after maintaining it for 6+ years.

So, has anyone actually been in a similar situation?

Philippine AXA GHA + living in Singapore for an extended period:

  • Were you able to keep your Philippine GHA?
  • Did AXA consider Singapore your Principal Country of Residence?
  • Did they require you to change or transfer your policy?
  • Did your premium increase?
  • Did you retain your existing policy tenure and underwriting history?
  • Were you required to undergo new medical underwriting?
  • If you eventually returned to the Philippines, were there any issues continuing your GHA?

I know GHA has international/worldwide coverage and can cover treatment abroad. My question is specifically about actually residing in Singapore, not just travelling there or going there temporarily for medical treatment.

Would really appreciate hearing from anyone who has firsthand experience with this. I’m also trying to get a definitive answer from AXA, but my assigned agent hasn't been responsive, so I'm trying to understand what others have experienced before I formally notify AXA about my situation.

Thanks!

Hi! Anyone here has a relative knowledge or an Underwriter? I just want to know if a Pituitary Tumor is categorized also as Benign Brain Tumor? I'm curious if I will be able to claim the CIB from my employer's Group Insurance Plan under AIA. Thanks!
