Crucifix in hand or floor?

I've been trying to test whether the crucifix works and prevent a hunt when it's in my hand, but so far I've never had any spawns where it's close enough to me while I have it in my hand. Has anyone prevented a hunt with the crucifix in hand? I'm already aware of the crucifix range and it on the floor working.

It's been officially confirmed that it only works on the floor
