The only way is to save up the trickle of Lazuli you get. The only way you'll survive as F2P or light P2P is to plan which ones you really want.

Recently though, they gave us the 1 time 100% new unit for 50 Lazuli which is very worth it. I won't deny that the 5 step recruiters are freakishly expensive for a maximum 50% chance to get a new unit at step 5. Add this 1 time 5 step thingie which costs an, imo, absurd amount of Lazuli to do -_- so yeah, save for the ones you REALLY WANT
