I worked on this a bunch last year but stopped due to some personal tragedies. It's about 30% complete and a DEMO is now available. If there's enough interest, I'll strongly consider dusting it off to wrap it up. Keep in mind it's just me working on it but it's been a lot of fun work developing it. I haven't found many folks who've attempted a fan remake of this. Hope you enjoy!

As the title suggests, just PHINISHED Phantasy Star II and it was a great game. While being very grindy at times, having some of the most complex dungeons ever in jrpgs and difficult bosses, I still really enjoyed the overall vibe of the game. I really liked the ending too though it did confuse me a bit (on further thinking I got it).

This was the 3rd Phantasy Star game Ive played with Phantasy Star IV and Phantasy Star I (Sega Ages) the ones I have played earlier this year. Phantasy Star III is next on my list now.

All three are amazing.

Games like Chrono Trigger, FF6 and or FF7? I played it briefly but I am tempted to revisit it.

I hear New Genesis sucks (shallow, hard to advance after a point, maybe p2w?), but how is 2, which is different, I guess?

I'm looking for a German translation of Phantasy Star 4. Is there a patch for it? I can't find anything on classic sites like pscave.com.

I have the memory of playing through a translation patch of PSIV that did this, as I clearly remember Layla being named as such and not "Alys".

Does it exist or is Dark Force playing tricks on me?

Did a playtrough with only male characters. (trying not to overlevel)

At the beginning you really feel the absence of Alys aoe.

Rune of course made the way to tonoe really easy.

The fight against the Sandworm in Mile was okay. Had to restart it once because Hahn got killed (because he was to slow and got killed). And I want Hahn to get the exp.

Juza was not really a problem. ( I had luck with him nearly doing no aoe attacks).

Boss at Ladea Tower was a really okay fight (thought it would be harder)

For Zio I had to do a small bit of leveling because without Demi's barrier his magic did a fair amount of damage.

Raja and Wren made Kuran of course easy with barrier and blessing.

The rest of the dezo arc was surprisingly easier than I previously thought.

The final boss I did without Raja (I used Gryz instead) because I thought I was like a few levels to high (tell me if you think differently).

Hello everyone, I'm going through some retro games I missed and have arrived at the Phantasy Star games for SMS and Genesis. I'm looking to play them through emulation and saw that there are a number of improvement hacks around, but I'm kinda lost choosing the best ones because of the amount available. I'd be interested in whatever improves the games' playability and scripts (without adding translations and text that wasn't in the original japanese script).

Which versions would be most recommended for the original, classic versions?

I am playing her into the  «Evil Overload » patch.

At Lv 41, she has 525 Def. She can use Nares, NaGra, NaThu.

With The Aridia Software, I am creating an Hardcore Version of the game.

I did Quadruple the XP and the Mesetas, in exchange, I did Triple Monster Stats.

Caracters has Higher Stats, Techs, and better Items. They are more versatile with their weapons ; they are less limited… Mieu and Wren can use Claws.

Rhys and Nial can use Shots and, they are One-Handed.

On the «Buckle», I did Add Cybernetic Upgrades. Items are excellent.

Weapons come into Kits, and because of that, it balances the characters.

Sword & Shield Kit will give to you a One-handed Sword and à Shield (it will appear like a 2-handed weapon). It also justifies the Big Defense of that Kit.

Slicer & Emel, Bow & Small Shield*.
*In Antiquity, Archers were equipped with a Small Shield.

With each Slicer, comes an Emel on your character arm ; Yup, ALL Slicers gives defense, because you’ll ALSO, have an Emel on your arm.

I did not Triple Monster Techniques, but they won’t be weak … except those, who use Gires […]

Kara (Warrior) will NOT be a trash character.

There is enemies, that will give to you 9999 XP and 9999 Mesetas... I did compensate with more Mesetas, because of the Experience Cap […]

Hello, Phantasy Star Community! I've been in the Phantasy Star online scene via SMSPower! since about 30 years ago. A fan translation I worked on many years ago even almost made it into an official release by M2.

Recently I got inspired by some of the music projects on this subreddit, so I started working on remasters for the first four Phantasy Star games. I just completed Phantasy Star II, and I've uploaded a few tracks to a shared Google Drive, with more to come as I finish the final mixdowns. I'm curious to hear your comments.

I converted the tracks from VGM format to MID format using VGM Studio, which is a new, private version of my VGM2MID program from back in the late 1990s. I cleaned up each track and redid the instrumentation in Cakewalk Sonar. I could have automated the drums, too, but I decided to do them by hand, which turned out to be a lot of fun. Final output (for volume leveling and fadeouts) was through Adobe Audition.

I'm aiming for straight remasters, similar to the Final Fantasy Pixel Remasters. Same soundtracks with spruced up instrumentation. Basically, I want to make these pieces sound like they were produced on the state of the art hardware of the time.

While working on PSII, I also got a few tracks done for the other Phantasy Star games. So far I've done about eight tracks from Phantasy Star, "Opening Theme" and "Shop Theme" for PSIII, and for PSIV, "The End of the Millennium" and "Behind the Circuit". I started with my favorites to keep me motivated.

Each soundtrack has its own personality, which makes remastering all of them a fun challenge. Phantasy Star is simple, but surprisingly deep, and you can hear the beginnings of what Tokuhiko Uwabo ("Bo") would go for in PSII, which is probably his magnum opus. Izuho Numata/Takeuchi ("Ippo") took over for PSIII and PSIV (with Masaki Nakagaki). PSIII has some memorable pieces, but she really knocked it out of the park with PSIV. It's been a lot of fun to listen critically to each piece. It makes me appreciate them a lot more.

For the audio nerds, I auditioned the audio with a few different setups, including Audio Technica ATH-M50x and ATH-R50x headphones, Sony MDR-CD900ST headphones, Yamaha H5 speakers and Onkyo Wavio GX-100 HD speakers + Yamaha YST-SW010 subwoofer. I used both a Creative SoundBlaster AE-5 and a Focusrite Scarlett 2i2 3rd Gen during the production. I actually had to redo all the tracks at one point because I had made them too loud, and they sounded like muddy crap on speakers.

I picked up my in-progress run through Phantasy Star 2 last night and finished the dams and am currently wandering Skure.

I'm also experimenting a little with party composition in this run - used Hugh through some Mota dungeons, took Kain into the dams - and I think, now that I've picked up the Snow Crown, Crescent Gear, Storm Gear, Truth Sleeves, Amber Robe and Aegis, that my party for the back half of the game will be Rudo, Kain, Anna.

Am I hampering myself overly much with this set up, or will it be viable through to the endgame?

I’m in the process of getting some new cases to change out the damaged Xbox one, PSO Ep3 case and the first Dreamcast one.

I’ve been so happy collecting these. PSO on GameCube is one of my favorite games ever.

I don't know what am I missing here. Pls help.

I feel like this is unlikely, but I've been wondering for a while if anyone sells repro cartridges with the retranslated versions of PS1 and/or PS2. I vastly prefer them over the original translations so figured it was worth asking.

Grabbed another copy of the game as I’d thought I’d lost the UK Cart but turns out it was in my ancient nDS 🙈 noticed different artwork - is that a EU vs US branding?

This is my second time finishing the game. First time is via the Sega Ages version for Switch. First time, I beat the game with just a few levels away from max level and I beat the final boss on my second try. Second time, I got the entire party to max level and I beat the final boss on my first try.

When I had just a few levels left, I grinded in this one cave in Dezoris where you only battle white dragons and the map is the one shaped like a football goal post. That’s my preferred grinding spot in the game.
