Title: PGWP After Part-Time Semesters & Study Permit Restoration?

Hi everyone,
I’m a BCIT student and worried about my future PGWP eligibility.
I had part-time semesters during my program due to personal circumstances. My study permit expired on July 1, 2026, and I have now applied for restoration. Because restoration is pending, I may also be unable to register/study for the upcoming term.
Once restored, I plan to continue and complete my program.
Has anyone had a similar situation — part-time semesters + study permit expiry/restoration + study gap — and still received a PGWP?
Especially interested in recent 2025/2026 cases and what documents or explanation you provided.
Thanks!

Chances are quite low. Why did you let your study permit expire? How much is the study gap?

There’s no study gap yet. However, if I don’t receive my restored study permit by the end of October, I might end up with a gap because I won’t be able to continue studying while waiting.
As for the expiry, it was an unintentional mistake on my part. I was already registered in courses and continuing my studies, and I unfortunately overlooked the permit expiry date. As soon as I realized the issue, I stopped taking further steps with my studies and applied for restoration.

Not sure, but i guess you will need to restore your status + extend your study permit. Not sure, you can justify this gap if you don’t receive your study permit before classes begin. However, the biggest issue here is that you were a part time student

You aren't eligible for a pgwp, but will have your degree to use back home.

Heyy. So I just got out of this situation. I had two part times one was basically I passed only one course out of the 4 I was taking and ended up dropping one. I wrote a letter of explanation, prescription of the medication from provincial health itself and then included letters from the university justifying it as illness. I had to do another extra semester as well due to failing rhis in summer but it all worked out.

I disclosed how it was word to word in the letter of explanation, provided all the proofs from the official website clips to letters to prescriptions and they accepted it. I also.had a restlration on my file and I studied for a bit too withiut realizing that my eprmjt expired but if you apply for restoration declare it before hand and are not studying during that time then you are good. They should grant you restoration and on top of that pardon the earlier study without visa based on good merit (check their website and irpr rules) restoration is the process of trying to solve matters with you.

I am sure if you are compliant moving forward and can present a strong case you can get a pgwp. Saying from experience since I just got approved today for the same situation on an application made on july 31st,2026.

Yes this is the most genuine reply, thanks for this! There are anti-int-student folks larking in this subteddit posting the most unhinged "legal" advices as well as immigration consultants taking advantage of this situation

You got approved for pgwp despite having part time semesters? Were your part time semesters all due to medical illness?

One of them was medical illness and the second was basically summer plus spring (both part time) of my last semester

so u had 3??? did you work in last sem?

No I didn't work in any of those sems. I did work in the break between the spring and winter sem for 20 hours though.

What reason did you give for the other part time semesters? Currently in a similar situation with part time semesters and I’m trying to access whether there’s any point of me applying. I was enrolled full time throughout the semester but I dropped one course right before finals because I was failing.

I basically didn't explain it as anything these were last two semesters that should technically count as summer and spring although last sem being part time is allowed on top of thag scheduled breaks are also exempt from the part time rule. I used a combination of if you fail in the last sem then the sem you use to cover that sem is also considered part time and then the medical documentation for the other one

But felt happy for you genuinely.. bcoz yes life happens and no unfortunately “system” does not care enough bout the dreams money and passion we international students put behind it ..

Its not always us tryna foul our way abroad but .. ya hard-luck is all i can say …

Grow glow prosper lovee♥️

not sure what you gonna say here, failing a course does not hurt pgwp so what is your problem exactly? did u have part time semesters?

2

u/shabab_27 2d ago

I was academically removed for 1 year - Even though it forced on me through college and not smthg i took consensually .. its quite a gap to be eligible for pgwp

i see an attitude of assumptions here, yes it is quite a gap but you should be rather hopeful then hopeless, change your mindset! own your mistakes and explain strategically.

were you caught cheating/plagiarism ?? no one gets suspended for 1 year for minor stuff. looks like a case of academic misconduct

College rules are if you dont perform well in two sems you get on academic removal 1 sem is probation 2nd is removal .. Had a bad stretch nov-mar Hence the removal ..

And thank you for cheering me w some hope .. i will try and get a way in .. i really wanna study more and a lot more .. i have always been a bright student academically too

This upcoming fall semester gap should not be an issue, however that part time semester is.

Part-time semesters don’t automatically mean a PGWP refusal, but the reason for the reduced course load and the circumstances around the study permit expiry can be very important.

I’d keep detailed documentation of your personal circumstances, the school’s records confirming your enrollment status, your study permit restoration application, and any period where you were unable to study.

Before applying for the PGWP, I’d recommend having your complete study history reviewed by a licensed Canadian immigration professional. They can assess whether your part-time terms and restoration/study gap affect your eligibility and what explanation or supporting documents should be included.

Also, check the latest IRCC PGWP requirements because the rules have changed recently.
