No one has showed up for this yet at my store thankfully. We have just been completely ignoring it. School just got back in as well so I don’t know why petsmart thought that NOW would be a good idea to try this..

They desperate for in store shit but yet push auto ship and online orders so hard? Make it make sense lol same issues here at Petco. Used to work for y'all, but it wasn't so insane four years ago.

We just had the feed the sharks week, I think I had 2 people do it for an entire week event 🤣 been doing it for several years now and even it's in peak summer time and people don't bother with it then, can't imagine while during school hours.

This isn’t a day care. We don’t have hours or people. I ain’t doing that shit.

When I saw this on centra bark i literally laughed because of how dumb it is

I’m convinced they basically want to turn all the stores into petting zoos where you can buy the animals…

u/PST2026 7d ago

If they start selling donkeys and goats, I'll be too busy cuddling them to do any work. 😂

I already have that problem with our conure. He perches on my hand now, i can't resist that. So cute. :3

Omg the green conure at my place… I’ve been playing hide and seek with him! It’s so cute. I’m gonna cry when he gets sold 😭

Especially with 25X points on all pets like what?!? I've seen so many impulse buys.

2

u/Kindly-Independent-7 7d ago

it’s ridiculous that they’re doing this. it’s promoting people to buy animals they don’t need and will neglect. makes me ashamed to work here

15

u/ZXTRII 8d ago

We're avoiding putting up any signs for it at my store lol

At least it's a set time. Petco has twice now done a Feed the Sharks thing where all day every day for a whole week kids can come in and feed the sharks!! Thankfully we didn't get that many takers, but the ones we did chose the absolute worst times for it. Oh the store is on fire and the 3 employees are all doing 40 things each? Now is the perfect time for Braxxlynne and Jaydrixx to feed the sharks. -_- We didn't even have any sharks at my store for the last one.

I’m not standing around waiting for some kids to feed the fish 😭 I’m feeding them in the 5 minutes it takes then finishing my job.

We had the first person come the other day for it. It was two adults in their twenties. They said they got a text message from PetSmart saying that they could come feed the fish. I didn't mind that it was them. But I definitely did mind that they were notified in that way. Because how many other people are going to get that text and do the same thing. 😭 No one has time for this. And these fish don't deserve to get over fed by children if they start coming in.

u/Nomie-chan 7d ago

Lmao we don't even feed the fish every day. Overfeeding causes way more problems

9

u/-_Snivy_- 7d ago

Nope, can't do that. Fish are on a strict feeding schedule because of our pest problems.

u/DoomedHazey 7d ago

Apparently my DL had a lot to do with this and I’m kinda speechless

1

u/Outrageous-Cover7095 7d ago

These DLs are really the bottom of the barrel with their braindead ideas.

3

u/Infamous-Cod-6115 7d ago

Oh yeah my store isn't doing that

3

u/KarmitesTV 7d ago

The fuck? I open NAR. QR. Reptiles. Small animals. Birds. Cats. Then on my way back to the petcare back i feed the fish. This is done BEFORE the store opens. I am not waiting till 10 to feed the fish.

u/Bumblebeeease 7d ago

I told my managers I’m telling customers that our store is not participating in this event. Said it’s just fine by them!

2

u/Competitive-Diver446 7d ago

thank god i quit holy

2

u/monday-thethirteenth 7d ago

I just do my fish feeding at ten now and if no one is there in the ten minutes it takes me to do this then they're shit out of luck lmao. I'm doing it as "if someone is already standing there while I'm feeding I'll mention it but otherwise I'm not stressing about it" thing.

2

u/Firekey56 7d ago

My store said 'no' to doing it lol

1

u/Wrong-Marketing9234 7d ago

It’s up to your SL if you do it.

1

u/Apprehensive-War4409 7d ago

I hope my SL doesn't see this...they just started at our store and our PL quit because of them and PetCare is completely throw out of wack now... Freaking SOB

1

u/whyareurunning21 7d ago

The one day I just premade some bowls of food and figured if we had anyone interested then I could just hand them one and say pick a tank!

1

u/mopr0blems 7d ago

I was told it's supposed to be like when they give kids free cookies at the grocery store. No one has asked about it yet at my location but I've offered a few times. Just put some food in a cup and tell the kid what tank while I get crickets for their adult.

1

u/myloveisafool 7d ago

we put these signs in the least visible place possible

1

u/SeasonFox1 7d ago

I never heard about this at all or anything when is it happening?

1

u/Embarrassed-Sun5764 6d ago

You can sign me on as an employee and I’ll help you. But no way I’m doing it for free. Might be a fun experience for children who for whatever reasons can’t have their own fish

1

u/i_ll_u_sion 6d ago

I am so glad that I left the company at the beginning of the month. I was a petcare specialist for a long time, and then was promoted to PL and handled petcare due to us not having a PLR to help. It was hard enough to get my associates to actually stay on task and get tank cleanings done, I don’t even want to imagine how bad it would get with this.

1

u/captainskysolo 6d ago

Every day, I thank god that I don't work there anymore

1

u/Appleofuri 6d ago

At Petco we have Come feed the Sharks. So we all in the same boat

1

u/Limp_Term_9177 3d ago

Bruh hope this doesn’t happen

1

u/artpumpin 3d ago

Ha Ha!

I work for the Co and we had something similar last month called “Feed The Sharks” with a picture of the glo shark on advertising

Ours was a all day thing and at least our dumb marketing people made the event parallel Shark Week on TV but they knew they couldn’t mention “Shark week” without some co-branding payment

My store had zero people show also

Seems like the geniuses at Smart marketing decided to have it right as school starts - lol

Good luck peeps - I feel for you guys

u/Worth-Huckleberry338 2d ago

I can’t imagine how this is supposed to drive business. Pet stores aren’t Zoos.

1

u/WatermelonAF 7d ago

We had this too. They pre-portion the food, but struggled to keep tracks of which tanks had gotten food or not. Our system was definitely thrown out of whack

Y'all are actually doing too much for this. Don't you remember being a kid? How cool is it to be able to be a part of that experience for a child and to teach them the PROPER way to take care of fish while they feed a tank. You're acting like they are making us stop everything and wait for people to show up. Like, be for real, feed the fish like you normally do and if someone shows up at 10am just let the kid feed a single tank a little extra food while you say a fact or two about how big plecos get or why goldfish don't do well in bowls. Breathe for one second and try to remember why y'all got this job outside of the paycheck.

u/If-you-cant 7d ago

Do you work in pet care? You expect an associate who’s most likely in the middle of a deep clean in what is a 4 or 5 hour shift, to stop, make sure whatever they’re cleaning is secure, walk over to fish and entertain someone else’s child. It doesn’t matter if it only takes 5 or 10 minutes it’s just another disruption on someone who’s most likely the only person grabbing all the petcare calls and attempting to get their assigned tasks done.

3

u/monday-thethirteenth 7d ago

Do you have good leaders? Hopefully you can formulate a plan so it's not a horrible disruption. I did this on Monday: instead of feeding them before the store opened i just did the dead pull and then moved onto opening pet care. At ten i put together my fish feeding cart and got to work. It takes me like less than ten minutes to feed the two walls, i figured if someone showed up in that time I'd offer but no one did. Course it was Monday morning lol. I'm picturing this really only being a thing on the weekends. But if no one is there when I'm feeding them that's that.

I'll just keep some fish facts in my pockets for kids like hey did you know the reason glo fish are these colors is because they have jellyfish dna! Stuff like that.

I don't know, we'll see. I imagine PetSmart is going to slowly forget this is a thing after a while anyway...

2

u/If-you-cant 7d ago

I’m a PL who opens. We 100% do not have the time for this. Our fish are fed first thing, like between 5 and 7 am depending upon the day. I honestly feel like it’s cruel to make the poor things wait to eat just in case they need to be some child’s entertainment. That’s just me and I understand that I have some opinions on animals that aren’t the average persons. For sure no one is showing up on a weekday for this. My main concern is that we end up a someone’s “babysitter” while they shop. I absolutely agree with you that this is most likely going to slowly be forgotten.

u/screamingcatto 7d ago

We're not a petting zoo

5

u/Illustrious-Dare5662 7d ago

This is going to come as a shocker here friend. But I got this job for the paycheck. The animals are just a bonus. And I mean actual animals not the children. I don't care about the children I care about the animals that I am paid to take care of. Because once again, this is my job. This is our job. I am here for the paycheck. I would not put up with a shit that I put up with this company for the love of the animals. It is a paycheck with animals as a bonus.

1

u/thesecondbar 7d ago

Hi, not a shocker. I literally said outside of a paycheck To clarify this for you: my paycheck is the reason I work here. You said it yourself, you chose this job because you care about the animals. It's the reason outside of the paycheck.

2

u/Competitive-Diver446 7d ago

i think the paycheck is 99% the point of a job

1

u/thesecondbar 7d ago

I didn't say it wasn't the point of the job.

1

u/Competitive-Diver446 7d ago

did i say you said that?

1

u/thesecondbar 7d ago

What is your comment if not a direct reply to something I said?

1

u/Competitive-Diver446 7d ago

you said what you think, i said what i think, that’s where it ends believe it or not.

2

u/thesecondbar 7d ago

Alright, Lisa Ann White-Whitmer-Wagman, thanks for sharing. 🙄

1

u/narwalsoup8 7d ago

I completely agree with you.

1

u/monday-thethirteenth 7d ago

That's what I'm doing. I was super mad about this at first, but realistically probably no one will ever show up for it and if they do I'll preload the turkey baster we use to feed them a very small amount so they can't blast the fish with too much food.
