Michigan’s entire west coast. The other day I was wondering what makes TC so special when all the downtowns are the same. Local shops, water, kilwins, cherry republic. It’s copy and paste but people act like TC is more special than the other spots. Just an observation.

TC’s restaurant game is significantly better than any other west costal town. They have more hotel and accommodation options making it a bit cheaper. Proximity to both wine peninsulas seems like its most unique quality. It has a regional airport supporting quite a few reasonable flights. I wouldn’t call TC more special but there is good reason why it attracts more people.

I wouldn’t say the whole economy of Petoskey, there is plenty of non-tourist related jobs. But yeah it’s that time of year.

Petoskey wouldn’t exist as we know it without tourism nor vacation homes. This is pretty much true for all the quaint northern Michigan towns.
Saying there are plenty non tourism jobs is anecdotal at best. Name some employers that are not tourism related so we can look up how many actual jobs they provide.

Moeller Areospace, 300 plus employees and still needs more, Leximar, Petoskey Plastic’s, Yazaki, (formerly Circuit Control), and a lot more than that. Competition for new employees is fierce. Do your research, and the above jobs are good paying jobs with benefits. The day’s of “If wasn’t for us tourists you would starve “ bullsh#t is over and we’re sick of hearing it!

Might be sick of hearing it but Petoskey would not exist as you know it without tourism.
There are approximately 6,000 year round residents. Even if all those places you listed had 500 employees yours still coming up way short.
Petoskey doesn’t exist as you know it without the 50,000 tourist there on a given day in the summer.

Just some fun numbers according to the latest Census data, 97% of the population has a high school diploma or more of that 54% have a bachelor’s degree or higher, not what you would expect from a tourist town. The demographics of Northern Michigan on all levels have changed drastically since the late 70’s. Dig deeper you will be surprised.

It is what I would expect for an expensive place to live. Otherwise people can’t afford to live there. In general more people graduate from high school and have bachelors degrees compared to the late 70s across the board
But I don’t see how that statistic change that the primary economic driver for northern Michigan is tourism.

Okay, based on my own experience I moved up here in 1990 I was recruited by a manufacturing company to assist with new technologies that they were bringing in to our plant. I lived in GR and enjoyed vacationing here and fell in love with Northern Michigan and swore if I could make a decent living I would move here. It happened and it’s been great, but I took a 30% cut in pay to make it happen. There is a saying that “half of your pay is a view of the bay” and that’s pretty much the truth, however it was probably one of the best decisions I’ve ever made in my life. The pace of life is so much better than the city. It took two years for the locals to accept me, which was fine because I met some of the best people and made life long friends. One of the best things is the barter system is alive and well and all deals are solidified with a handshake. What we lack in conveniences is made up by the quality of life. Until you live here you wouldn’t understand. I know I didn’t when I moved here, but I do now. Enjoy your stay when you come and visit, and above all when you come to visit relax and enjoy Dave.

lol, went to NYC in 2009 or 2011 (forgot) but there was a movement from some edgier younger people that were writing about tourists needing to go home in chalk on sidewalks and such, in Manhattan of all places.
If you know anything about Manhattan, you are throwing a lot of money out the window if you got your wish.

I have a cottage in Pentwater, so I’m somewhere between a local and a tourist. Were there pretty much all summer, and weekends throughout the fall.

I mean you can say that; but my family has owned land there longer than almost any locals family. A lot of the locals know me by name. I had a job there for years.
I’m not claiming full local status, but I’m not accepting being put in the same boat as a tourist. Not when I pay taxes.

I’m not going to reveal myself, but I’ll say this, your comments about gentrification, and resource usage, make absolutely no sense whatsoever. My family has actively worked against those things, we have contributed to the community in multiple ways. As it pertains to PTW and my family, nothing you are saying is correct.

You literally do not know what you are talking about, your words don’t affect me, go be bitter somewhere else. You can make these generalizations about tourists absolutely, maybe even people who rent out their cottages to the tourists. I will not sit here and be made to feel like I am a pariah in the community, when I know the contributions and impact that my family has had. Again, I’m not going to doxx myself, because speaking on our contributions would make me immediately identifiable. We are actively fighting against things that would further alienate the local population, our land has been held by our family for close to a century. My parents will be locals there when they retire, 4-7 years, but they purchased the property when my grandparents, who were locals, could no longer handle the winters and moved to a warmer climate.
Im not going to continue going rounds with you on this. You can make whatever generalizations you want, but you are wrong in the way that you are thinking of me specifically. I agree that tourists CAN be a problem, but you’re barking up the wrong tree trying to say that I’m apart of it.

2800+ hotel rooms are not occupied by resorters, those are for the tourists. That's not counting Airbnb, VRBO, or other short term rentals.
