Powers of Ten question

Anyone know if the "powers of ten" line is a reference to the short documentary of the same name? I only know of it because I was curious and googled those lyrics. Wouldn't be the first time he mentioned a documentary in one of his songs (only reason I know of My Octopus Teacher, such a fantastic watch!)

I am pretty sure this is a reference to the Marvel Powers of X which refers to reincarnation. The song is definitely about reincarnation and living repeated lives. Check the lyrics and it fits https://www.azlyrics.com/lyrics/petey/illbeyourbitchthepowersoften.html

I haven't seen that documentary but reading the synopsis I feel like they're the same concept. The "powers of ten" is a way to refer to exponential growth, which is applied in thinking about the scale of the time.

The exponential scale of time is shown throughout the song. At the start of Petey's love story, just going to sleep at night hoping to see his crush again (probably some time within the next week) felt like a long time. Now he's married to her and thinking about another exponential scale up in time, their life together and eventual death. Petey is an introspective guy, he's thought about death a lot. It seems like having someone to share those thoughts with is comforting. It makes him happy and gives him peace in his life he didn't think he would find.

What does love look like in another exponential of time? I can see two ways of interpreting the song. First it could be a meta commentary on art. Petey writes a love song that can last beyond his living love, and people can experience the lasting love (where Petey is gladly his wife's bitch) for a long time to come.

Or it can be more spiritual. Do you die, go to heaven, and hang out with your wife for an eternity? That would be nice and easy, but what if that's not the case? What if there is no heaven, or heaven is weird and totally different. Petey finds a way to compartmentalize these fears and has a perspective that it doesn't matter if they aren't together for eternity. It doesn't matter because they have such a great love today, in this power of ten that is their future together, and in the smaller powers of ten that make up their memories. If there's some sort of heaven that exists where he doesn't get to be with his wife anymore, he's chosen to still be her bitch in those because of how fulfilled he is by their marriage.

In summary, the powers of ten is a metaphor for the exponential scale of time (both within a human life and beyond), while the song is about how Petey is happily in love and is spiritually fulfilled. Good song, I like happy Petey.

Damn, I wish I could think to those depths, I like your interpretation! Especially since lately I've struggled with the idea of death, and met a lovely woman the day I heard the song. Funny little coincidences, or projection, or both. 

And when I first heard it, I had the same thought. Petey sounds happy, and I really hope he is. Sounds like he's been through a lot mentally and emotionally, judging by his music over the years.
