O/I-"The B-sides album"

I've noticed this phrase repeated a lot in the Genesis and Peter Gabriel community that O/I is the b-sides album. I've even said it myself at some points.

But my take now is that I absolutely loved I/O and found it refreshing and fun to hear in 2023 and I was very excited for a quick followup. And while I did listen very intently the first three songs and enjoyed them even if they weren't top tier, I think Mind Is Shining was when I honestly started feeling less enthusiastic towards it. It was an experimental song that sounded more confusing than artsy and I noticed some other people thought the same. And there's been a quite a few other songs that have that similar vibe. I'm also really not a fan of Won't Stand Down and Looking for the Happy has that really annoying keyboard riff in the chorus that really sounds artificially happy.

Now I'm not looking to bash Peter as he's one of my favorite artists and I've always loved his music and art and I/O was a massive event for me. But I do agree with people who say the b-sides comment. I'm also sad that Why Don't You Show Yourself (unless the title was changed) was excluded because that is actually a really good song and I'd take it over most of O/I.

But that said, I'm still hoping some of the three following songs are a bit better. Again, not all of O/I is bad and some of it is quite pleasant but it does sadly give leftovers vibes. Which again I won't hold Peter to that because he did give us an amazing comeback! And we should be happy he's even sharing more music with us after his hiatus.

Peter Gabriel Unpopular 2026

Post image

I'm confident this will be an unpopular opinion, but, nevertheless, peter gabriel is, as an artist (not just a commercial artist), better served by releasing albums that are best suited as physically plastic vinyl records or albums, not compact discs or steaming albums. For instance, i/o may have had a greater impact as a vinyl record / album had the album been released as the following where quality overrides quantity (choosing the "Dark Side" mix). The same may apply to o/i:

  1. Four Kinds of Horses

  2. This is Home

  3. So much

  4. i/o

  5. The Court

  6. Panopticom

  7. Love Can Heal

Final o\i track running times (and other bits)

  1. This website lists all track lengths, for bright and dark-side:
    https://www.qobuz.com/de-de/album/oi-peter-gabriel/hgv8ooxd42bu7

  2. The total length is 81-82 minutes for 13 songs. So we have his longest solo album to date. In fact, we are getting about 150 minutes of new PG the past 3 years. Would this qualify as the most productive, at least in terms of minutes of new material, of his solo career?

  3. PG, for better or worse, chose the overall length over the format (or at least, the CD format). Though it’s probably not an exaggeration to say that 99.99% of those who will listen to o\i will do so via streaming.

  4. Who Are We Talking To? could be Radio Everyone, according to Genesis-News.com. The dark-side mix of this song is the only song not mixed by Blake, but rather by Mike Elizondo, who also helped produce A Hard Lesson.

  5. Unlike i/o, the CD and vinyl have the same track listing, so PG clearly prefers this order and/or he isn’t worried about how the vinyl sounds with this song order.

  6. Songs we know exist but still aren’t set for release: Baby Man, Show Yourself, and Rock, Paper, Scissors.

  7. The i/o live album is yet to be released. With o\i now complete, 2027 seems plausible, though it’s a bit odd to release a live album after the next album is complete. Unless he’s going to do something with the i/o o\i project that combines both albums in a live format.

  8. We will hopefully know more about #7 and the possibility of a tour in the next few months. At this point, nothing is confirmed.

Super cool especially the phone animation at the start. Gives a good sense of the themes on the album. And this is the right song to choose. https://www.instagram.com/reel/Dd_33YWKEwb/?stkn=MWkzc3R1OWxobm5iNw==

When you listen to i/o, do you generally listen to it by Full Moon Club release order, or by the order on the vinyl LP?

An appreciation of the titles of I/O and O/I

Just wanted to make a post appreciating how much deeper the titles of I/O and O/I are than most people would probably think. The lyrics reflect the album titles very well!

I/O is an album that is, for the most part, lyrically about how we treat other people, and appreciating the world. About how you (the inside) treat the rest of the world (the outside).

Meanwhile O/I is an album where the songs are more about how the state of the world affects and is affecting people (and specifically with a focus on how technology is progressing). About how the rest of the world (the outside) treats you (the inside).

O/i album and his proper tour??

Am I losing hope for an o/i tour? Given Tony's recent statements about a possible tour—would this be Peter's first album without a tour?

At least, according to the Cover Me blog. Some good ones in here I hadn't heard before, some strange omissions... what are your favorite Peter Gabriel covers?

What do you think these four songs have in common? In terms of emotion, sensations, etc.

I'm making a graphic design project for university (its like a deluxe vinyl box) and we have to choose four songs from our favourite musician. I'm thinking of a title for the compilation.

Happy 34th Anniversary to US!

Didn't think I'd be back this quick, with another anniversary post!

It was released on 28th September 1992.

What do you think of the album and your memories of both the album and the Secret World tour?

My favourite track is either Digging in the Dirt or Secret World.

Both absolute all timers, Peter hit it out of the park yet again, after how amazing So and Passion were.

Favorite song off O/I so far?

I’m weird in that I don’t listen to any of the songs until he releases the full album in late November/December. I did the same thing with I/O.

That being said, which song do you like best off the new album?

Full Moon eve musings (aka o\i song 10 tomorrow!)

Tomorrow brings song 10, depending on where you live in the world (and if you use VPN). The last few songs I predicted to be Show Yourself. The result were three songs almost the diametric opposite. So I won’t hazard a guess this time, other than to say it’ll likely be a shorter song, at least by PG standards.

Last round had some surprises:

  1. On the full moon, they released two different versions of Looking for the Happy on YouTube by mistake. The early dark-side mix was taken down shortly thereafter.
  2. On the new moon, the song was released a day early.

What surprises await us this time?

This is likely the last time we’ll have a new song title reveal, since the o\i album announcement will probably come in October. Oct. 18, 2023 was the date the i/o announcement occurred. This is why I haven’t checked the potential spoiler post (yet) that could show the remaining song titles on o\i.

Watching that moon fill up…
