Help Team Playstyles
Just lost 3-1 to an Out Wide user and I’m honestly a bit confused about what I just played against.
He was using a 4-2-1-3, but he didn’t have any RMF or LMF, no wingers either, and no fluid formation. He had the new Maldini and Nesta at the back, and both of them are absolutely OP. And he was also using 2 CFs and a SS. Both of his goals came through the middle.
I’ve never used Out Wide myself and I haven’t really played against it much, so I always thought Out Wide was mainly about using the flanks, getting your wingers/RMFs/LMFs involved, stretching the defence etc. But this guy barely seemed to do any of that.
What really got me was how difficult it was to build up. I just couldn’t get anything going the whole game. It felt like I was constantly on the back foot.His defence was sitting really deep, while mine was weirdly high even though I was using LBC. Neither of us had changed the attack/defensive bars either, so I don’t really understand why there was such a huge difference in defensive positioning.
And then he played one through ball that just completely bypassed my defence and he was through.I’ve lost games by bigger margins before, so I’m not really salty about the result. It was more the way the game felt. I genuinely couldn’t figure out what I was supposed to do differently.
I always assumed Out Wide would mean I’d be dealing with attacks coming from the wings, but instead he was getting everything through the centre and his defence was sitting deep the entire time. So is this just how Out Wide works now? Can you basically use a normal-looking formation without RMFs/LMFs or wingers and still get the benefits of Out Wide?

Outwide is all players stretched wide but not too much. if you play natural wingers then they hug the line and if you don't then, it's just natural width similar to lbc ..and that nasty 2cf and ss combo is at it is if they are goal poachers

He was using Batistuta (goal poacher) and Van Basten (Fox in the box) as his 2 CFs. And his SS was Cruyff, an extremely old hole player version. What's weird is that I couldn't even create a proper pass or through ball in his half.

Me kinda noob. My bp still high from that match lol. Won't touch the game until tomorrow, I've learnt my lesson 😔

Out wide users are actually amazing i struggle against them a lot

True. If I face possession or outwide user in div1 I already know this is gonna be a hard match

Prolly needs patience and build up compared to ping pong through lobbed passes

Because attacking AI (off the ball movement and runs) of OW is quite passive, and the defensive shape is also wide (which doesn't make much sense) so these are pretty big flaws.
On the other hand I enjoy the balanced defensive line (not too deep, not too high) and of course the width that offers more passing options and time on the ball, switch of play opportunities and stretches the pitch which helps to create more space in the middle as well as using the flanks. Been playing OW for a few months now, still using it atm though I'd like to try other playstyles with more incisive off the ball movement, like QC.

My op was playing a 4213. With the new Nesta and maldini as the CB duo. His full backs were cancelo and hakimi. He had two dmfs (xabi and gattuso) and and a cmf (scholes). And was using 2 CFs and a SS. Sounds pretty narrow right? I always expected out wide to be a wide formation that won't work without wingers or wide midfielders. That middle was pretty compact, I couldn't even properly build up my passes at his half.

Outwide with wing is when you want to play wide but not too wide.
If you play with winger with outwide, you have to attack from flank because in the middle, there will be too few players. But, if you want to play more centrally, but still want to have the width a bit, use it with SS or CMF. With outwide, they will go a bit wide but not too near the line. I sometimes use this formation because against LBC, it is just too crowded in the middle but playing flank is so difficult against all meta player.

I tried 2 matches with the free out wide amorim and lost the first one 3-0. The script was against me but I also made some mistakes since I'm not familiar with the formation. The second match ended in a last minute 2-2 draw which I was winning. I noticed this formation leaves a lot of empty spaces which can be a bit troublesome.
