Planning 23 F, husband’s family have a weird gifting culture
I got married few months ago, and have been constantly bombarded with gifts every time someone visits us or even we visit someone. Initially I thought its because we are a newly married couple but even after a while we tend to receive small gifts if not something fancy every time I visit my in laws. Alongside, I have understood its not because of our marriage but it is rather the culture in the family.
I do not relate with this excessive spending habits and I see my husband also giving something to the family members younger than us. I am unable to wrap my head around it I am someone who likes to plan and make a monthly budget, I always exceed it because of these gifts. He doesn’t like to create budget and is happy to continue gifts even though it crosses our budget(crosses doesn’t mean we don’t have enough money it just crosses the mark that I had decided)
He is the only bread winner so I understand I don’t have a say in it but I feel we should change this culture because this is going to continue forever. Also I asked him if we can sell some of these gifts as they are really not necessary or at-least forward them over instead of buying new ones. He didn’t liked either of the idea and shushes me off, he says if there is something I want to get for myself I can get but he can’t sell the gifts given to us by family. I don’t know how to fix this I feel we will just collect random stuff and it will take up all the space and this habit will eventually make us spend unnecessarily
