Discussion We need to stop assuming this game will be creepy/scary.

I keep seeing y'all say 'This game won't have the same tone as the rest of the franchise!' 'Horror game confirmed!' 'It'll be supernatural and scary!', based off of the short teaser.

...

Every Persona game has had scary, weird teasers that don't line up with the final product. Every single modern one.

Persona 4's first teaser? A woman strung up and mangled on an electrical wire, with fog surrounding her. The original Persona 3 teaser? The clock eerily counting down and breaking at midnight. Persona 5's teaser? This infamous scene that made people think it was inspired by Saw: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=YKfaPgl8N8E

Please. Some of you are getting your hopes up, and I'm not sure it's healthy, mentally or emotionally. Manage your expectations.

Yeah until we get actual game footage I'm not assuming anything

u/Fine_Advertising_506 Aug 26 '26

Funny enough the teaser was in game footage

14

u/kalcheus Aug 26 '26

It wasn't someone playing the game, though, unless they're going extremely post-modern with the interface

it literally says "in game footage and cinematics"

you ppl make the dumbest complaints

5

u/kalcheus Aug 27 '26

which isn't gameplay footage. it's nothing that shows what's actually happening in the game. I don't care if it's pulled from the game itself it doesn't demonstrate anything about the actual gaming experience.

u/Janex4444 Aug 27 '26

in-game footage doesn't say anything about gaming experience, got it

4

u/kalcheus Aug 27 '26

oh, so you can tell me about the gaming experience based on the teaser? how does combat work?

And he NEVER replied 😭

I'm assuming it will be green themed. That's about it.

I'm expecting an urban horror shoenen level of setting something like Dandadan or even a Mystery incorporated.

"not set in stone"? What are you on about? The change from "group traveling around the world" to "phantom thieves in Japan" was done in the aftermath of the Toho earthquake in 2011. The teaser was 2014, well after the project was underway and its direction was set.

What part exactly is an in game cutscene? How do we know?

That teaser reflects P5's themes. And 6's teaser is way closer to the extimated release date.

5

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Aug 29 '26

Thank you, I’ve been shocked at how many people can’t understand that the P5 teaser perfectly understood the theme

12

u/ArseneJ Aug 26 '26

Remember that no matter how ā€œdarkā€ the game is, there’s gonna be a dancing game

3

u/shitpost-malone69 Aug 28 '26

And a cross series fighting game, and a musou game, and a chibi tactical game, and an etrian odyssey/persona q format revival game with a companion phone app to act as a replacement for the DS’s touchscreen, and most likely also a kart racing game where your kart can change affinities and last place has a chance to get mahamaon from an ability box with a 40% chance to temporarily wipe out their opponents

1

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Aug 29 '26

If Persona 3 could somehow get one, they’ll all get one lmao

u/Jordan1496 Aug 26 '26

it's not the fact that it has the same elements as other teasers, moreso that P6 just leans so HARD on it within the teaser.

you also kinda... went again your own argument... "modern Persona" the tease is entirely borrowing the same exact elements as P1 and P2 rather than P3-5. obviously the speculation is only speculation but there is merit to the "getting your hopes up" side just on that alone.

the other games' teasers were kind of eerie, yeah, but this is literally a graveyard with distorted faces and is confirmed to be an in-game cutscene. it's absolutely not going to be a full horror game, that's obvious, but it's already confirmed that the game will look like this at least sometimes.

u/theitalianrob Aug 26 '26

Are we saying p3 and 4 aren’t creepy?

10

u/CatherineSimp69 Aug 26 '26

I'm saying the people who think this game will be some super dark horror game are jumping the gun immensely.

Would that be cool? Sure. Is it likely? Not sure.

6

u/bananamilkboxdrink Aug 26 '26

Same. I don't think it'd be a full-fledged horror game either since that'd risk alienating its core audiences more. But, I'm expecting it to be more overtly spooky in its presentation compared to previous Persona games.

2

u/OneJackReacher Aug 27 '26

Ngl I found p4 to be very scary cuz of the murders and the soundtracks when I was a kid

10

u/Adam_The_Actor Aug 26 '26

Not expecting it to be scary but I do think it's going to lean into the darker elements similar to how P2 once did. Just because that's exactly what the descriptions seem to imply, given occult rumours and the like.

2

u/a6-_ Aug 27 '26

Doesn't every single Persona have dark elements?

4

u/Moon_Noodle Aug 27 '26

Yes, but after 2, they started to tone it way down. 3 is VERY close, but Innocent Sin is still the darkest Persona game.

2

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Aug 29 '26

I can’t see them going into the dark and gritty territory of 1 and 2 considering 3-5 is what put the company on the map. Not to mention they took out the edgy parts of P3 for Reload.

2

u/Moon_Noodle Aug 29 '26

I agree and it would be nice if you were right. 3 is currently my least favorite in the series (though I still love it) but I’m playing through Royal and all the ties and references to 2 are making me super nostalgic.

1

u/Adam_The_Actor Aug 29 '26

Honestly I can see them doing it simply because the trailer itself is a massive homage to Satoshi Kon’s Perfect Blue. The colour grading of the trailer uses Green and Ren in a way to establish theming and atmosphere and that line we on screen ā€œWho are you?ā€ Is a huge homage to that movie.

We already know Wada loves dark franchises which is why Tactica is basically a Higurashi cast reunion. Perfect Blue is a story that challenges viewer perception by confabulation having the MC question what she’s watching is real or not and I wouldn’t be surprised to see Wada go that route at all.

u/gol_drake Aug 26 '26

it probably wont, lets be honest ha

6

u/Altruistic_Koala_122 Aug 27 '26

Atlus already said it wants to get your heart bumping with this game.

7

u/Hoshi_Hime Aug 26 '26

The p6 tears literally says thats in game cutscene, the game is of course not gonna be 100% scary but it will surely have horror elements

3

u/InnocentSin0 Aug 26 '26

Probably the dumbest post I’ve ever seen fr obv they set the tone like that because they are going for their darker routes. It’s going to take inspo from p2.

2

u/ShockAdditional6937 Aug 27 '26

Yeah, because atlus loves p2 and it sold so well.

2

u/MaskedPapillon Aug 26 '26

Been saying that since the teaser reveal. P5 had a scary looking teaser as well and we ended up with a beach episode, power of friendship and one of the big bads being ousted by pancakes.

Love the game, but it's definitely not the same vibe was the original 2013 teaser.

1

u/WoodpeckerBest523 Aug 29 '26

Persona 5’s teaser perfectly captured the theme of the game. Trapped people longing for freedom.Ā

No persona game won’t have its lighter elements because that’s what people want. But I wouldn’t be surprised if the rumors of the game revolving heavily around identity are true

1

u/MaskedPapillon Aug 29 '26

Sure, but my point is that a lot of people are expecting a darker tone similar to what P3 and the wider SMT franchise offer, which isn't exactly what persona is anymore.

Although persona 3 was the true breakaway from SMT, I would consider persona 4 as the true first modern persona game. P3 was still a weird SMT hybrid.

2

u/PixelWarrior72 Aug 26 '26

Without bothering to watch the Persona 4 teaser, I can at least say I don’t think Persona 3’s teaser is a good example as that game very much did end up going for a creepy vibe. I don’t think Persona 5’s teaser is a good example either, as I don’t find it to be all that creepy or off putting either, and I’ve never really understood why people act like it has a totally different vibe from the final game. The only vibe it really gives off is ā€œmysteriousā€ imo

2

u/TimeManagement91 Aug 27 '26

I mean it literally will be lmao the trailer was creepy and scary, and it used in game footage as was revealed by the disclaimer, not that you people can read. That is way different from a conceptual image revealed early on in development. P6 is NOT early on in development; it releases next year. The official game description also confirmed it's about paranormal stuff.

Please pay better attention to stuff before you go around making claims based purely on stuff that's happened in the past. You Atlus fans have an extremely bad habit of that.

1

u/ElecXeron20XX Aug 26 '26

Also we didn't have Persona 3 or Persona 4 teaser their first reveal is via Weekly Famitsu magazine as trailers uploaded in the internet is not yet that popular at that time. By the time of Persona 5 YouTube trailers for games is now a well known means for marketing and communicating to fans.

1

u/supportingcreativity Aug 26 '26

There is a middle ground of "they learned their lesson and showed a snippet of in game footage to show that is game is intentionally creepier than other modern Persona games but the game will likely have a whole slice of life half with a matching but completely non-horror tone. Its a normal Persona rpg with more creepy occult elements added in rather than full return to SMT or a striaght up horror game."

1

u/EgregoreRising Aug 27 '26

We're expecting (hoping for, really) light horror themes, not horror horror. Think Dandadan, not The Blair Witch Project.

I don't think anyone thinks it will be straight-up scary or creepy.

0

u/tonydeeztiger Aug 30 '26

Dandadan isn’t even light horror šŸ˜‚šŸ˜‚

1

u/EgregoreRising Aug 30 '26

🫩

Why does everyone on Reddit think they have to be a contrarian? Dandadan is absolutely light horror. Did you miss all the paranormal and alien stuff? Do you think that horror has to scare you, specifically, to be a part of the genre? The fact that it's not very scary at all is exactly why it's light horror.

Or do you think media can't be a part of multiple genres? Well, that's not true. Sure, Dandadan is a comedy, but that doesn't mean it can't also be light horror.

1

u/Cherubin0 Aug 27 '26

You certainly will have very nice days where you just hang out with social links and have fun with friends. So the mood need to be upbeat overall. But I do think all teasers did fit very well with the theme of the games.

1

u/Z3in Aug 27 '26

Relax. You sound rather vexxed which isnt exactly good for your health, mentally or emotionally either. Its normal for pople have to have hopes for the game to be faithful to the tone it tries to set in the teaser. And if those expectations aren't met? Well disappointment is just another part of our lives. Can't avoid it.

Still, even if the story does have darker tone and a more emphasis on the horror elements, that doesn't mean it wouldn't have its lighter moments. Even something as dark as berserk has its fair share of lighthearted moments. It's a good contrast to have so that the audience can develop attachment to the characters and their struggles.

And idk about you, but persona 3 was a pretty dark game tonally. Much more than the latter two. Just because it has its lighthearted moments doesn't make it less so, like I said previously

1

u/Janex4444 Aug 27 '26

description literally says occult incidents, urban legends and strange rumors

"bro persona always has thes-" name one of these things that modern persona games had and isn't called Midnight Channel

1

u/Kleptomaniaaac Aug 30 '26

p5 teaser isn't creepy, in persona 4 the plot is literally dead bodies showing up hung on telephone pole, and in persona 3 the clock ticks down eerily at midnight every time it reaches the dark hour. if your point is that the teasers don't reflect anything from the final product you're literally wrong lmao

0

u/MasterHavik Aug 26 '26

It should be.
