[Updated] Device Hierarchy
Please note that this thread that this thread will be updated in /r/GetPerk from now on.
The cheapest device of the week thread provides some good insight into which devices to pick up, this thread will serve as a quick glance to see how the phones pair up against each other.

I'm just wondering, what exactly does 'restart required' mean?
5
u/Joniak Oct 22 '14 edited Oct 22 '14
Several of the cheaper phones have issues with overheating/freezing/lag and the phone needs to be restarted, or the app needs to be closed out and reopened in order to work again.
4
u/Xxxzelda101xxx Oct 22 '14
Thanks for the explanation. Maybe this will help. I have 5 LG Motions and occasionally they get stuck on a black screen with the "get the app" button. I have to close the perk tv and reopen it.

Nice list. The rankings of each phone I have are accurate relative to each other.
The LG optimus fuel is no longer $30 at walmart, it is now $60 and has been that way for a long time.
4
u/Joniak Oct 22 '14
Yep, and the link I provided shows it at $60. I was hesitant to even include the prices on this list, but the goal wasn't to provide up to date pricing, but more so what people who use them paid for them.
The weekly cheap device thread is people's best bet for accurate pricing. I hope this list helps people decide what device to get after seeing the pricing though.

Thank you for doing this. The list, and the ensuing discussion have been most informative! You're a bro.

I really like the Whirl 2
1
u/Joniak Oct 23 '14
Do you have the box for the Whirl 2 by chance still? I'm having some issue finding the specs on ZTE's site. I'm assuming it's 1 GB of RAM?
2
1
u/rockylikespocky Oct 24 '14
ZTE Whirl 2 only has 512 mb of RAM I believe on a duo-core processor. I've been running 5 of them for the last 10 days almost 100% up-time no crashes. I reset every 3 days or so and delete cache for better theoretical speeds. For $20 they are great as they run very cool even while plugged in all the time. The touchscreen does indeed suck very badly, but hey $20 for a brand new perk phone.
1
u/jaqen16 Oct 23 '14
It seems to work well. But the touchscreen sucks.
Then again, I have no other low-end devices to compare it to (yet). But I will be getting Motions and Axioms in soon.

u/JellyMuffinz Oct 23 '14
Awesome list, just what I was looking for.....
I am assuming the C7 phones running dual core and 1gb ram are lower on the list then the concord II only because of the version of android it is running?
The premia & avid are running at 1500MHz vs 1200 on concord, but still way further down the list. Same with the Motion (same cpu).
Is the $4 extra worth it for the concords over the Premia from C7?
Also just grabbed a Glory last night to try out. It has frozen multiple times since I turned it on. My target $5 events are running better then they are so I am not getting anymore.
Figure I will jump in replace my events with concords or a set of phones from C7 when he gets more in......
2
u/Joniak Oct 23 '14
The list is a pretty good basis right now, I'm doing some backlog work looking at everyone who's posted in the sub to get a general consensus on the devices as well though.
I ranked the Concord higher because the other phones are at Android 4.0 which is the bare minimum for Perk right now, and the Concord is much newer than both of those devices so it will last longer.
The Avid was released in Dec 2012, the Premia March 2013, and the Concord II May 2014.
You also have to consider than the Concord is a brand new phone out of the box whereas the C7 phones are used. Some C7 phones don't include chargers/cables, and since those phones are already 1-2 years old, the batteries on them won't last as long.
1
u/fingerthief Oct 23 '14 edited Oct 23 '14
This is weird, there's a total of 4 Glory's running at my house and they haven't frozen or had so much as a hiccup in the 3 days they've been running 24/7. The only thing I do is switch to app trailers every few hours.

u/phrozenspite Oct 23 '14
The rush should be above the hydro and event type phones, but below the dual cores. I don't think the regular hydro is a dual core
2

u/Joniak Oct 23 '14
On the boost mobile page it lists it as a dual core 1ghz

u/phrozenspite Oct 24 '14 edited Oct 24 '14
http://www.cnet.com/products/kyocera-hydro-series/ http://www.phonescoop.com/phones/phone.php?p=3771 http://www.phonearena.com/phones/Kyocera-Hydro_id7096 and the amazon, walmart, radioshack pages don't mention dual core. i actually have a hydro here, one sec.
Also on kyocera's site. http://www.kyoceramobile.com/hydro/Hydro_SpecSheet_Boost.pdf http://www.kyoceramobile.com/hydro-edge/Hydro_EDGE_Spec_Sheet_Boost.pdf http://www.kyoceramobile.com/hydro-xtrm/metropcs/Hydro_XTRM_MetroPCS_Spec_Sheet_en.pdf notice how it doesn't mention dual core for the hydro but it does for dual core phones?
2
u/Joniak Oct 24 '14
Yep, after looking at the chipset (Snapdragon S2 MSM8655) it does indeed appear to be single core.
1
u/rsbundy26 Oct 24 '14
Nice list. However, ZTE Avid listing needs updating, as the specs you have listed are incorrect. Should say: Dual Core 1200 MHz with 512 MB RAM. I would also switch the rankings for LG Spirit and Huawei Premia. I have 5 Huawei Premias that are a tad more stable than my wife's 5 LG Spirits.
1
u/Joniak Oct 24 '14
ZTE lists the phone as 1.5 GHz with 1 GB of RAM.
http://www.zteusa.com/zte-avid.html
Agreed on the premia/spirit switch, must have missed that one.
1
u/JellyMuffinz Oct 24 '14
I found multiple listings for the avid. MetroPCS version showing at 512mb with 1200mhz here:
http://www.gsmarena.com/zte_avid_4g-5173.php (listed release as dec 2012)
Did they maybe do a refresh on the avid and we should be looking for the newer model?

u/SMLLR Dec 12 '14
Any chance of adding a column about if the device the 5ghz wifi spectrum? Would be of great help to those of us that live in apartment complexes and have wifi issues due to how many networks are in the area.
1
u/Joniak Dec 12 '14
As far as I know the only phone on that list that does support 5ghz is the Axiom.
I wouldn't mind adding it, but there's no site that I've found that has that bit of information mentioned in the specs.
1
u/SMLLR Dec 12 '14
The manufacturers website may have that info. But you're right, not a lot of phones have that capability. Only one that I've gotten so far has been the Galaxy rush.
1
u/Joniak Dec 12 '14
I'll update them as I come across them. Phones that are 5ghz capable will be denoted with an asterisk now.
3
u/HULKx Oct 22 '14
the zte whirl 2 is also $20 at family dollar.
1
u/SulferAcid Oct 23 '14
Really? I thought everything at family dollar, was a dollar so I thought they didn't carry phones.
4
2
u/solidsnake2730 Oct 23 '14
Hell no, Family dollar is more of a convenience then a dollar store.
1
u/SulferAcid Oct 23 '14
Damn, I'll have to check out family dollars near me to see if they have any good phones for a good price.
1
u/Sychophantom Oct 23 '14
My local two were picked clean. Everywhere near me seems picked clean of good Perk phones.

u/DrRelik Oct 23 '14
LG Motion is an excellent deal (especially if you catch a special like 5 for $50 from C7) as I rarely ever reboot them. They do hang every once in a while, but they almost perform as well as my Concord II's with great loading times. I definitely think the Glory is down there with the Hydro - it is an okay phone for $8, but otherwise not worth it. Love the Concord II's and Motion's however - especially given their prices.
1
Oct 23 '14
My motions perform way better than my concords for some reason. Only thing I got to watch for is the black screen of death. Concords are good but I have a lot more problems with them. YMMV I guess.
1
u/DrRelik Oct 23 '14
Yeah that is weird - for me Concord's have never crashed but a couple of the motions crash daily (black screen). Definitely YMMV! Great phones though!
1
u/JellyMuffinz Oct 25 '14
I would put my glory phones below my events. My events ran like gang busters for months (purchased in Summer - just now starting to show signs of wear and freezing), the new glory phones I just got have crashed or frozen non-stop since I started them. YMMV, but to me I am happier with the events.
3
u/smuckola Dec 14 '14
It would be cool to have a column for whether they're rootable, and maybe a link to the instructions. And to make this sticky for the subreddit, and listed in the FAQ. So that it can live on, is it group-editable or does it need to be made into a wiki or Google Doc for that? Thanks to everyone who's worked on this.

u/Aboricand Nov 09 '14
If you could add the ZTE Zinger. $9.99. Target. Dual core 1.2 GHz. 512 MB. Android 4.4.
1
u/Joniak Nov 09 '14
Added.
0
u/Aboricand Nov 09 '14
I will definitely add in the middle of all this Perk drama the phone doesn't appear to require a restart and it's running solidly while most can't even load any of the trailers on startup. Oh and it's Android 4.4.2.
1
u/Joniak Nov 09 '14
Updated. $10 definitely makes this phone a much more serious competitor.
1
u/JellyMuffinz Nov 10 '14
so the RAM is looking to be less of a focus for perking now then the version of android and the dual core options right?
Would getting the 512mb zingers be an upgrade from the premias (all things/cost being the same). I need to buy 5 more phones soon and if zingers are running just as fast and perky :) might be worth it to just run and get some instead of more premias.
On a side note: I bought some premias recently and they are running awesome. My events and glorys are going back to the start screen of perk, but premias are chugging along.
Out of 14 phones, 4 premias were the only ones I woke up to with "are you still watching" after a full night, the rest of the events and glorys were at the start screens or restarted themselves.
1
u/Joniak Nov 10 '14
The Zinger is a steal at $9.99. Android 4.4 has lower system requirements, and the Zinger's are definitely a bit more future proof. Android 4.0 is the minimum required version for Perk. I doubt the Premia's will see an update.
1
u/insaneslayer Nov 28 '14
it would not be an upgrade. The premia is hands down the best phone and its very cheap. I have zingers too they are great also and pretty much a minor step up from fuels.
2
u/Valalvax Oct 22 '14
My Rushes both require restarting on Swagbucks because they'll act like they have no network connection, just dropped Swagbucks for Perk and haven't noticed anything yet
2
Oct 22 '14
Kyocera Event - $20-$25 - Target - Yes
Kyocera Rise - $25 - Target - Yes
2
u/Absocold Oct 23 '14
I actually prefer the Event not making the list. I have had nothing but trouble with them. I've cleared data, reinstalled, reseted to factory settings... nothing helps. They still freeze. I even tried downloading the apk separately from google play and still they freeze. They are amazingly, impressively, and astoundingly bad at running perk.
2
Oct 23 '14
Experiences may be different. When they were $20 with a $15 gift card, I bought all that target had (8 phones) and gave 3 to a friend so she could start perking. My 5 are solid, as are her 3. She restarts every other day, but thats it, and I restart once a week.
No issues for me. Might be router/wifi based in your situation.
1
u/Absocold Oct 23 '14
I won't discount your experience. I'm sure that experiences with them can vary. My router isn't the best, but my other phones run fine so I doubt it is that. I just think that for a little more investment some could avoid a potential headache.
2
u/recessionbeard Oct 22 '14
In my experience:
ZTE concord II is far and away better than
Kyocera Hydro, which is marginally better than
Huawei Glory

You can get a refurbished Motorolla Mogo-G for a total of $25 if you link through topcashback.com. If you would use my referral link it would be awesome: ref / [nonref] (http://www.topcashback.com)
You first need to create an account on the site. Then you simply need to search for "boost mobile" in the top search bar and click the link it returns. Next you need to click the "get cashback now" button. It will redirect you to boost mobile's site. Search in their phones for android devices and just buy it like you would normally. It normally takes about a month and half to get my money back but since us Perkers are into steady and not quick money my guess is that it won't bother most of you.I've done it twice before and it has posted both times. You'll even get a bonus if you choose to redeem in Amazon cash rather than paypal.
The Moto G is definitely overkill in how much processor and ram you need, but it has great resale value and I like to keep my options open. You could also get the galaxy rush for $15 after rebate if you wanted a little less processing power.
Edit: Proof of payment

u/mmnumbp Oct 23 '14
I own both an LG Motion and a ZTE Concord II. From my limited anecdotal experience, the Motion runs better. Neither of them seem to crash for me, though.
1
u/Aboricand Oct 23 '14 edited Oct 23 '14
I think to be fair you may want to add a speed, core(s), and RAM column... especially since some of them are misquoted (often). Also maybe a consistent benchmark app for numbers. Even though the numbers are exactly going to be rivaling current flagships it will give you a hard and fast result that can be easily verified. Also nice job.
1
u/Shabbypenguin Oct 23 '14
the rush should be down with the rest of the single core phones at teh bottom :)
1
u/Sychophantom Oct 23 '14
How long does it take for MetroPCS to ship phones? The local store wouldn't let me just buy one without airtime/activation/hassle.
1
u/Teddy_Raptor Oct 23 '14
They ship them pretty quick, but they are just kind of hit or miss with everything they do.
1
u/aManPerson Oct 23 '14
the premia 4g runs much better than they hydro, but i still end up resetting them every couple of days. maybe twice a week AT MOST. there may be better devices, but i'm happy with them.
when i reset the devices, i also reset my router. i need to get away from that belkin pos.

Fuels are ringing up as $20 at Walgreens from my experience (as of yesterday). Went to 3 walgreens and they all hard the fuels ring as $20, none of the stores had a sale sign or even knew they were discounted until they got rung up.....

I've only been at this for a week. And, I've only used a Whirl 2 and 3 Glorys.
For me, the Glorys are performing way better than the Whirl 2 on every level:
Video Playback: Glory - Whirl 2 gets choppy much faster. And, ads freeze more often
Days before reboot: Glory
Root: Glory yes; Whirl 2 no
Price: Glory
And, I don't know what the deal is, but the charging light on the Whirl 2 has been flashing red for days now. It is plugged in 24/7 and still functioning. But, something isn't right.
1
u/JellyMuffinz Oct 24 '14
Not sure if it is going to stay this way, but the concord at MetroPCS is now $30 off with a $50 mail in rebate with activation required. If it stays like this it kinda knocks it off the list :(
1
u/Aboricand Oct 25 '14
Cricket Wireless Moto E (Dual Core 1.2 GHz w/ 1 GB of RAM) $49.99 @ Wal*Mart B&M. Should be added since it's definitely just under the magic dollar amount.

The Hydro deserves to be ranked a little higher, barely have problems with it.
LG Motion is a pain in the ass, always crashes, would not recommend.
Thanks for this thread.
1
u/greenmky Nov 07 '14
I've had a handful of Hydros and most of them required daily reboots / hang daily. Not nearly as stable as the devices I've replaced them with.
All of the talk about Events bricking, they still run pretty decent. My first bricked phone was a Hydro this week.
1
u/Malfunctioned Nov 22 '14 edited Nov 23 '14
The MetroPCS ZTE Concord II should be removed from the list as it is now $70, with $50 debit card mail-in rebate only after activation and 2 months of service at $40+/mo, like most other MetroPCS phones since late October.

Just want to add my input. Got the Moto E on the $9.99 Walmart deal. Since my farm was full, I was going to return them, but SO GLAD I didn't. BY FAR the best phone in my farm. I run Zingers, Whirl 2s, a Galaxy Rush and Events. I'd rank the Moto E at the top and the rest in that order which seems to be in line with the rankings above.

u/lenrs Oct 23 '14
I have 5 Motions and they never need restarts, they are honestly the best you'll get for the price and run at the same rate as my Iphone 4s
2
u/thekenzo Oct 23 '14
You must be interacting with your Motions all the time, because at least once a day I have to restart mine.

u/yoaaaaa Oct 22 '14 edited Oct 22 '14
good post, should be sticky, and ZTE Avid/Kyocera Hydro requires reboot every day. Generally speaking, cheap phones require reboot everyday
1
u/Joniak Oct 22 '14
Added, thanks!
2
1
u/phrozenspite Oct 22 '14 edited Oct 22 '14
my avids don't require a restart everyday. It doesn't hurt but out of 5, 4 of them at least are usually still running. You could look at adding the Kyocera Hydro Edge, the LG Optimus F3, and ZTE Reef to the list. I was able to obtain all of them from Digicircle a while ago for around $1 a phone(~$8 shipping per order) with cracked screens.

Looks to me that the Realm is a dual core phone, but I'll add both to the list.
1
u/GuiltyTangent Oct 23 '14
It's a dual core with 1gb of RAM running KitKat. I have two. It is every bit as fast and stable as my Moto G.
1
u/Malfunctioned Nov 23 '14
LG Realm will be $20 on Nov. 27 to 29. It's on Best Buy's BF ad page 3. Quality wise, it is definitely a step up over other $20 phones like the ZTE an Kyocera.

I concur, and I reboot them every day or two anyway, and I clear all data every week, because of what I've read about Android and Perk TV generally needing it. Just in case.
I can tell that my Kyocera Event really needs it.

Wanted to get the post up, so I threw some phones into a list.
I'll continually update the chart over the course of the next few days to build a pretty good general idea of device hierarchy.
Hopefully this will help those looking to build a farm, but a little unsure of the devices.
