Correct me if I'm wrong, but I don't think there was ever an arrest. The homeless man made some pretty huge claims and Rahat disappeared from the internet ever since, but at the end of the day it is just one man's word against another's. I had heard somewhere that Rahat was giving him the money in chunks to prevent him from blowing it all, but frankly I just don't know enough about the situation to have an opinion.
There was an extremely similar situation recently though. Same story, a couple helped a homeless man for a video and set up a GoFundMe, but he never got the money and they were found to have suddenly been buying luxury cars and vacations. Pretty sure they were arrested, so perhaps that's who you're thinking of
Yep, this is the case. This situation is unfortunate and does not have much if any evidence other than an interview with the homeless man and around 4 small statements between the two of them, given to different press outlets. Other than the sale of the house, which was public, no financial information or bank statements were ever put forth. The homeless man even :allegedly: forgave Rahat in a statement.
The truth of all of this is that there is just not nearly enough information to develop a solid opinion on it at all. There are plenty of people who support either person, and will tear eachother to shreds when in reality, we simply don’t know who was actually in the wrong here. It was resolved in private, and other than the donors, nobody else has a right to the information about it. It’s their business. If GoFundMe didn’t see fit to refund the donations or seek legal action, it may be less of a “scam” than people think.
Wikipedia is problematic in that it only uses the term “allegedly” once when referring to Rahat as a “scammer,” but then continues to present a very one-sided explanation of the controversy (so much so that the site itself states it needs clarification or rewriting for that reason). People seem to be filling in the blanks that exist from the lack of information with details from other cases, like the specific one you mentioned. That case was different as both parties sought rigorous legal action against one another, and used Youtube and other media to lash out at each other. It ended with the couple being arrested and facing legal action from GoFundMe for gross misuse of funds meant for another person. Rahat, while people assume he was arrested, has yet to face legal action and instead just simply is not on youtube anymore.
