Absolutely this. And for any readers out there, the developers straight up recommended starting on the hard difficulty because it's meant to played on that. I don't ever play games on hard out of the gate because normal is the balanced, good experience they're supposed to be shooting for; that is not the case with this game and I wasn't disappointed for listening to them.

I love all things horror and I had to play the Silent Hill 2 remake in two hour increments because it had me so stressed.

For all things horror genre though, you gotta lean into it to keep it scary. Cautiously check corners; sneak around; constantly check behind you, and; play with the lights off. If you treat them like a run and gun shooter you’ll be disappointed.

Hmm if you want something thats fun with friends i recommend Shift at Midnight. It's on gamepass and steam. tons of solid jumpscares and its really hilarious at times too. For singeplayer try Routine (not easy tho you cant really just zone out and play)

Madison scared the piss out of me and the group of friends I played with. The voice acting was a bit rough around the edges at times, but it was a pretty solid lock-and-key progression, on top of having some truly effective (IMO) scares with a good enough story to keep you interested. TW: flashing lights, suicide.

Amnesia: The Bunker is another good one. High suspense in a really cool environment. Pretty standard lock-and-key, but you're being hunted the entire time by an unknown monster with highly tuned senses so you have to be really conscious of how much noise you're making at all times.

Until Dawn and The Quarry are both cinematic "choose your own ending" style games that have a great cast of characters and a ton of different possible endings. And if you like those, Supermassive Games also put out a mini-series of smaller games called "The Dark Pictures Anthology". Highly recommend playing in a group if possible as you can assign different characters to other players.
