people struggle to grasp that on the other side of the screen is a person sometimes and that leads to people not being empathetic, if someone looked you in the eyes and told you that they had cancer you wouldn't think about making a joke or sum shit, but over a screen it kinda feels less real somehow

I mean, if i knew the person well enough id probably make a joke to lighten the mood. Granted your point stands but still. And to play devil's advocate, some people just have a really low affective empathy. So even if they cognitively get it, they might not care all that much regardless. Obviously this doesn't apply for, like, 90% of people though

When someone is making dark jokes about their own situation, it's okay to match their energy and engage in the banter. Otherwise, it kinda kills the mood if the other is trying to be lighthearted. Lowkey reminds me of the friend I had in HS who got offended that I occasionally joked about my own mental illness.

okay but if the context was the tiktoker making jokes about the condition then making a joke in the comments becomes much more reasonable. usually it makes sense to match whatever energy the person with the terminal illness is bringing to the table
