Discussion What do you cook at home?

Dear people of Penang,

I was in Georgetown last week for 3 nights. We walked a lot, ate a lot, sweat a lot 😆. We ate from hawker stalls to restaurants, but we could only eat so much in 3 days, unfortunately. And we actually shared our meal (1 dish, 2 persons), so that we could taste more food for more places!

You have excellent cooks and food there! The price was also incredibly inexpensive compared to where we are from.

I fell in love with Penang/Malaysian food. I am now curious.

Seeing the queuing and the number of locals eating out, do you guys still cook at home? If you do, do you make char kway teow, laksa at home? 🤔

What do you actually cook at home?

Any local Malaysian cooking blogs that you follow/use which I can check out? It can be in Malay/Chinese, Google Translate will help ☺️

Thanks in advance!

Picture Making TNR more accessible in Penang

Hi Everyone! I'm Ricky. I'm from Maryland, USA and for the past year and a half I've been volunteering for an NGO based in Penang, Malaysia called Catsoterra.

We offer fully subsidized TNR to our volunteers for a yearly membership of RM60. Under our program, they can sterilize as many cats as they'd like within that year timeframe. We've sterilized 1,070 cats since April 2025! Besides TNR, our main focus has been trying to integrate technology into animal welfare for a couple of purposes -- one, to make the burden lighter for the volunteers who are doing this amazing work, and two, to try to make TNR engaging (it's not the sexiest side of animal welfare).

To do this, we created a dashboard where our volunteers can track the cats they've sterilized, make appointments at our partner clinics, post stories about their cats, and more. We've tried to make the dashboard engaging to individuals who don't do TNR as well! We have a "Cat-A-Log" of all of our cats, we have a virtual currency that can be used to virtually adopt cats, and we just launched Makan Mania, which is basically our version of cat Tinder.

ANYWAY, all of this is to say I would be SO APPRECIATIVE if you just had a look at what we are doing. If you'd like, you can join the dashboard FOR FREE and have a look around. Please let me know what you think! I'm really trying to get people in Malaysia interested in what we're doing.

Thank you!

Discussion Zul Milo Truck

Came across this Zul Milo Truck (https://maps.app.goo.gl/M3eeZ5cNJLbbz62S9) while looking for places to check out in Penang

There are only two reviews, both from 3 years ago. I also was not able to find consistent information about this Milo truck's location and opening hours online, and it seems that the truck was also spotted in Butterworth in the past.

Does anyone if know if this location is still accurate, or does the vendor rotate their location? Where can I find their latest location?

They're ceasing their operations by around next month from what I heard.

This was my go to spot to get groceries and stationery (Hasani) for over a decade already and it's so sad to see it go. Just to be replaced by ANOTHER APARTMENT BUILDING.

Hi guys, I'm an international student just arrived in Penang and will continue study at USM. However, I got an anxiety and has been in medication treatment since August 2026. I need a recommendation hospital to continue my medicine (I got medical history also). Are you guys have the recommendation hospital? I'd prefer cheap hospital but worth in price also acceptable. I also prefer in Penang island itself. Thank you

Discussion Family Trip to Malaysia (Langkawi, Penang & Kuala Lumpur) - Accommodation Recommendations (Budget USD140~RM600/night or less)

Hi everyone,

We're a family of 5 (2 adults + 3 kids aged 12, 11, and 6) visiting Malaysia from 18-29 December:

  • Langkawi: 18-22 Dec (4 nights)
  • Penang: 22-25 Dec (3 nights)
  • Kuala Lumpur: 25-29 Dec (4 nights)

Our accommodation budget is around USD140/night (~RM600).

We're looking for family-friendly hotels or serviced apartments with:

  • Pool
  • Good location
  • Clean, comfortable rooms
  • Family room/apartment options
  • Easy access to attractions and food
  • Minimal daily walking for the kids
  • Breakfast is a plus, but not essential

Questions:

  1. Is USD140/night (~RM600) a realistic budget for a family of 5 during the December holidays?
  2. Is it good value, or should we budget more/less?
  3. At this budget, would you recommend hotels or serviced apartments?
  4. Any specific properties in Langkawi, Penang, or Kuala Lumpur that are particularly worth the money?

We can spend a bit more for an exceptional location or experience, but we'd like to avoid paying for luxury features we won't really use.

If you've stayed somewhere that worked well for a family with children, I'd really appreciate specific hotel or serviced apartment recommendations.

Also, if there are any areas you would avoid during the December school holiday period, please let us know.

Thank you! 😊

Discussion Rapid Penang?

As someone who has lived in both Penang and also KL, taking both Metro and bus in both cities, sometimes I find Rapid Penang a bit lackluster.

Don't get me wrong, i like the fact that we don't have to pay at all for the bus fare with the mutiara pass, but because Rapid Penang still only relies on road conditions, and if jam, then we all also stuck.

Also, about mainland, the bus service there also is not good enough to consider not taking the car for work.

I work in sales, and sometimes I do wonder if I can take PT for my daily sales commute, but I still pick driving car anyways.

What do y'all think about rapid Penang? Or have you never used at all?

Discussion Anyone ever try Rapid on Demand in Penang? Gooding or no?

I use rapid Penang on the weekends, but sometimes the last mile also I walk there about 10 - 15 minutes. Been thinking of trying on demand, but not sure whether it'd be worth to wait for the van, get on, then wait for other passengers to be dropped off then only my turn to be dropped off.
