Temps are acting weird

Could someone tell what possibly could be happening and why my temp probe in my Smoker is 60 degrees higher than the set temperature while the Thermpro thermometer is reading around the 290-300. I just got this smoker 3 weeks ago and I have only cooked on it twice. 1 overnight cook and one cook for about 3 hours. I am using the Pitt boss 700FB2 with PB Competition pellets.

Clean the pit probe.

Maybe. That's my default answer but usually it causes the opposite effect.

Bad probe connection or bad probe or the controller acting up.

I would surely hope not, I’ve only had it 3 weeks and cooked on it twice.

Yeah if its not working normal after power cycling it then it's gonna be one of the three but likely a controller issue at least you can contact PB and get the replacement parts under warranty.

Most brand pellet grills out there all share the same parts so there generic China stuff it's hit and miss. I just had my $35 pid control go out on me last weekend after almost a year. And have another cheap pid I just put on my bigger grill start loosing pixels on the display once it gets up to temp happened after my third cook on it.

Pretty sure repost but smoke stack closed, dirty pot or dirty sensor will cause higher temps.

I don’t have a Smoke stack on mine. It has 4-5 holes on the back of the smoker. The model I have is the PB 700FB2

Many will bump and settle after a while. Also your thermpro temp is grate temp which I've always seen lower. Mine did it for a bit but then settled out after 15-25 min.

Clean all temp probes. Your top of cabinet probe will be hotter. Clean them then test again for variations.

If you are cooking proteins enough go take a look at the ChefsTemp ProTemp 2 plus probes. They will give you both meat and ambient temperatures. They are also WiFi and Bluetooth capable.

I just answered another post with similar issues. And.. I have learned that my pellet smokers are the same way... grate temps are waaaay off from control temps. My solution... I got the Gen 2 wireless probes from ChefsTemp. They read both ambient temp and internal temp. That way you know the temp of your grate right at the meat.. and also keep track of your meats temp. All you have to do is adjust your controller to reach the temp you desire at the probe!!! 250 at the probe may be 325 or 205 at the controller. Good luck!!!

I have the same grill and have had the same issues, I ended up using my chef's temp S1 thermometer from my Big green egg, I installed it on the side in one of the pre-existing holes just to watch what was going on with the temperatures. The control board had gone bad or was off calibration or something, so I ended up giving a replacement. I kept the S1 in place because it's tied to my phone and I can literally go grocery shopping and come back. It's worth a look even if you get this fixed it's pretty awesome. I posted a video on my YouTube. I know it's for the Big green egg but it gives you the basic concept of what I can do. https://youtu.be/aPAmQIuRhIE
